    Default Mordjinn's terrain

Update 5th of June 2013: A couple of pictures of our gaming table.
Update 11th of July 2012: Circle Orboros stone platform with LEDs.
Update 10th of July 2012: Puddles and forest clearing with a stone circle.

Here's some of the stuff I've been cooking for our games.

First off some simple hills. Decided to make them one level high as it minimizes the hassle with getting the models where we want them to be easier.

Then a bit bigger project inspired by Ruined Gothic Temple II at Terragenesis. After I saw that ruin I knew I had to have one. Couldn't get my hands on the discontinued the other company's Gothic Ruin, so I used the Basilica Administratum instead (sorry for using the other company's stuff, but it works great even with damn a lot of skulls). My problem was that in the original version there are loads of slopes and uneven terrain, which would be hell to stand on for my top heavy warbeasts like Angelus. So I decided to make more Warmachine/Hordes friendly version of it by making everything more accessible and playable (and almost as cool looking). All the places can fit a 50mm base, so warjacks and heavy beasts are welcome. Really happy how this one turned out. Lylyth is scouting the ruin for next sunday's game, when this piece sees its first battle. There are more and bigger photos, including WIP shots and how to in Finnish in our Rillikerho - blog.

They look pretty good. The hills don't seem like they'd be too much of a problem with the heavy jacks trying to remain on half of them (You could probably put dice down under a base that isn't fully on the hill), and that is cool.

Great paint job on these terrain pieces. The only thing that is kinda of iffy is the ruined templed. Not saying that the terragenesis is not a good buy but it probably needed to go under some conversions to look more like a steam punk, iron kingdoms style building. We are currently undergoing terrain modifications and additions at my warstore since alot of it is old 40k stuff. Even if the skulls are part of a Ogroth ossurary there should be symbols there to indicate it so. Also there is alot of grey on both pieces. Sometimes a little diversity of images and color can go a long way. But as a solid terrain piece, job well done.

@Fellio: Yeah. The hills are simple and the cut is really sharp, so there's the smallest possible slant part. At the moment we're just two fellows playing the game and wanted the kind of terrain where our preciously and painstaikingly painted miniatures are as safe as possible.

@marxlives: Thanks for the compliments. My aim was not to build something for Iron Kingdoms only, so I didn't want to put too much "character" into the piece. Just wanted it to be a long forgotten ruin in the forest, where our Hordes armies can fight. As a generic piece it works beautifully for any game we're playing (atm Warmachine/Hordes/Malifaux). I think I'll do some more IK type terrain soon, but just wanted to get this off my back as it was the first ever big terraing piece I've build

Looks good bud. If you want some stuff thats not quite so grim dark for 40K, look into some of the Pegasus kits. They have a gothic temple set that is much easier to work into the steam punk motif than some of the 40K stuff bud. Very nice though.

Love the ruins! Is that just foam core underneath the buildings, or did you some sculpt some stuff? I can't tell. Looks great!!

@ColemanZappa: Thanks. It's 30mm foam where I cut all the holes and stair with hobby knife. The arches on the lower side of the base are cut out of cardboard and glued on and painted with textured paint.

Tested the ruin first time today. It worked well in real action. We had an objective marker in the middle and my striders and my friend's Pureblood warpwolf we're fighting over the objective throughout the game. On the last turn my Angelius flew over the wall and used her aspect to push the Pureblood out from the objective area, thus gaining me the needed point for victory. Sweet success

Here are couple of crappy phone camera shots from the fight:

This is looking really nice. A big centerpiece like this really gives your table focus, gives it a bit of a story.

I don't mind the skulls at all. I agree that a couple of points of brighter colour could add more visual interest, but it's great as is. And I have to echo Greywolf - the Pegasus Gothic Ruins kit looks really nice and not so "38,000 years in the future." (Check out this thread for pics etc)

Been busy lately. In between building my houses (see Merchants House revisited thread) I needed some things ready for our Saturday's WM gathering.

First off I built a 4'x4' gaming table from foam:

And I also built a temple from foam I textured and a aquarium skull bought from a pet shop.

The metal piece in the back is a real Mexican 10 peso coin I had lying around the house from a holiday:

    Here's a warmonger (40mm base) for a scale:

Started a new table project. This one is going to be used also for Malifaux and for easier storing it's only 3'x3' (91,5cm x 91,5cm) big.

First off the plan I draw, scanned and finished with photoshop.

The table is made out from 5cm thick foam I found from the trash. The cobblestone is made with some fake leather (=plastic) canvas I had lying around. Decided not to attach the higher level to make the table multi purpose.

Then I painted the basic colors with Folk Art acrylic paints. And took some bigger picts.

Then I washed the whole table and liked the black pools a lot...

...just to be disappointed in the morning after the paint had dried. Where's my black??? Well, I guess this less contrast version looks more "realistic"

Level one of the table finished. Did some drybrushing and ended up doing another black wash on the cobblestone part to make the colors blend in better. Sorry for the crappy cellphone shots, but I guess you get the idea.

I like the table's coloring after it dried. It looks good. That aquarium skull you worked into some terrain takes the cake though. There's something mythical about that piece!

@SymCL Thanks for the compliment. I really like the final color of the table and a bit rubbery material of that "cobblestone" mat is really nice to play on. Good that you commented about the temple piece as well, I have to call the guy I made it for and finally give it to him

Here are two shots of the table right before the first two test battles.

Now I have to finish the second level and the houses I have been building since early spring...

I have to give you some props on your latest piece, the part I really appreciated was how you used fake leather to form the cobblestones. It was a great example of having the matierals work for you rather than the other way around. The structures are also general enough to make the table flexible for a wide variety of games such as the GW line, Warmahordes, Malifaux, and Bushido. Also the paint job was specific enough to give the feel that the battle was taking its toll on the terrain. I got to ask you about the houses, which look great by the way. Are they constructed from balsa wood or is it cardboard with foam core wedged between? I was just wondering what your trick was cause they do look very great.

Cheers! The houses are just (really good quality) paper houses (or should I say ruins) from Daves Games (www.davesgames.net). Printed them on a bit heavier paper and when two sides are glued together they become sturdy. Then when they're ready I used a black marker to make the white ends black. Easy, cheap and good looking. I'm in process of building some non-paper buildings and the thread can be found here:

Finished the second level this weekend. Will upload some pictures of the whole table together when we play next time. The house is the painting test building for my scratch built village set (check here for WIPs and more of that project). It has just the base colors, so there's a lot of washing, highlighting and detail stuff to be done so it will fit the table's "dirtyness".

Inspired by Beaumains Mosh Platform thread I decided to build a Mosh Platform. It was relatively quick job, two evenings of carving and painting and here's the result. The platform is designed to handle both Mosh Pit scenario sizes as the main circle is 16'' and the smaller one (stairs and the edge stone circle) is 14''. There's a error in both MkII books and the scenario text says 14'' and the picture has 16'' circle drawn. I think the Infernal ruling is 14'' but we've always played with 16'' so I accommodated both. Let me know what you think.

Edit: Ah, the Most Pit size was fixed to 16'' in errata. Nice.

Wanted something a bit more cinematic for our table so I built a small clearing. The terrain piece has three circular control zones built into it. The base of the rise is 12'', the top of the rise is 10'' and the stone circle is 8'' so it can be used for many different scenarios. The tree is GW tree, which isn't perfect but does the job.

I also built a couple of easy and fast ponds while testing out resin the first time of my life.

Here's some pictures of the Circle Orboros stone platform I just finished. This one was a long project which changed from completely painted to paint&LEDs project on the fly. The LEDs are cast into resin and there's a 3volt battery giving all seven lights juice. The circles are done in a way that the platform can be used for 12'', 10'' or 8'' control zone marker if needed. Very happy with this one as it took my hobbying to a new level.

Voihan pyhä Kekkonen!! That Orboros platform is great! The functionality of the piece also seems to be top notch!

Did you carve those symbols to the foam?

Thanks for the compliments mates. Lets see how the pieces work in action tomorrow when we have our Warmachine night.

@Therat: Adding leds to the piece was really quite simple. The biggest problem I had was finding my soldering iron. They really add some drama to the piece. Looking forward of seeing your LED build!

@Jojukorh: Yes the symbol is carved to the foam. I printed the orboros symbol out in right scale, taped it to the foam circle and carefully cut the paper and scored the outlines to the foam. Carving it was a bit of a messy chore, but not too bad. The bottom was a bit rough, but I pressed it with pencil end eraser to smoothen and paint did the rest. How about adding some LED lights to your buildings :P

You really got the bottom smooth, thats why I asked that did you really carve it.

I honestly thought about LED´s but I decided to try something different. I will do the torches and other flames with Forged Monkeys Dayligh pigments..

I like your village. You did a good job of creating a solid base that really helps accentuate the paper buildings. Your Circle centre piece is also really nice.

Got Warmachine on the table after a long break. Had great time. I played against my friends Khador and we decided to do a two scenario special story -game. The overall story was that the Scyrah scouting party was trying to find an informant named Oleg from the small Khadoran village. First game was in the outskirts of the village and if the elves won (which happened) then the second would be in the the village. If Khador would have won the first then the second game setup would have been forest. After the first game we came up with an idea to shift the terrain instead of creating something completely new. So we moved the village part of the first table terrain to the other side of the table and then set up more buildings to the other side. I think it worked really nicely. Even the dice favored us as the second game scenario turned out to be Incursion, so the elves had three points which they were trying to find Oleg: The tower, the little park and the inn. Unfortunately for me the Khador won the second game. Had great time though and it was fun to play Warmachine again.

Here you can see the two setups:
