    Default Lancaneer...?

    Hello!
So I've recently started playing Warmachine, with two whole games under my belt.

I've got it into my head that I have to run Murdoch with Sam's Devil Dogs and a Buccaneer. Modelling and painting are a big deal to me and the biggest draw here is painting them up in repurposed Cygnar uniforms. What I'd also like to do is convert a plastic Lancer to be the Buccaneer, maybe a little stripped down as though it had been salvaged.

Anyway, all that is basically to ask if that sort of "proxying" is generally a problem in Warmachine circles? Bearing in mind that it would be painted in Cygnar colours. Would I be roundly jeered by angry nerds (I don't use that as a pejorative)?

    Thanks!

I don't think anyone would complain so long as you have the correct weapons / arms. There are probably a ton of threads answering the same question already, though, so just use the advanced search function to find threads with "proxy" or "proxying" in the title.

Good luck with Sam and Murdoch! I'm going to try the same combo, but probably with a Talon or Vanguard. I hope it works out as well as I hypothesize.

I made a Lancer using a Hunter Chassis for Kraye just used the arms from lancer and strapped a arc node on top no one yet at any tourney has ever had a problem with it. I call him Lunter.

I belive the rules state that 51% of the model has to be of the original model. If 51% is a buccaneer you're all set

Conversions need to "contain a majority of parts from the WARMACHINE or HORDES model for which the rules were written" and additionally warjacks need to contain the actual weapons of the intended model. I'm not entirely sure how that will be possible if you're using the chasis of a lancer (and thus its legs, body and head.) Of course, those rules only apply in tournaments and other 'official play.'

Get a Lancer and a Buccaneer, and magnetise the arms.

Then, you can play your "Lancaneer" in friendlies, and in tourneys where it has been allowed by the TO.

If it isn't allowed by the TO or whatever, you can just pop the arms back on the Buccaneer for that game to make it 100% game legal in every environment again.

You'll probably be buying both Jacks anyway, right?

    One quick warning:

The plastic Cygnar lights are huge. If you just stick the buccaneer's arms on him, it will probably look pretty silly.

Yeah, the Buccaneer is a tiny little guy. The scale difference might not be as bad on a Classic Lancer, if you're totally set on this idea.

The plan was to just convert the Lancer without using the Bucaneer at all. I picked up a Firefly last week but hadn't had a chance to take a good look at it so I didn't realise how much bigger the new guys are.

Wait, so... you want to just make a Lancer with a net instead of a shield, and no arcnode? That would almost certainly not fly in official play. I'd be leery of "Classic Lancer + Buccaneer arms," but I'd almost definitely rule against "slightly different Lancer."

If you really want the Cygnar look you might also consider a Hunter or Grenadier with Buccaneer arms - the Hunter chassis is small and light anyway, and there is no version of it that carries any sort of spear or polearm.

How "acceptable" the conversion is depends on whether or not you care about tournament play and official events. The conversion guidelines the others are quoting are the rules for Steamroller tournaments.

I don't care one bit about tournament play, nor do I care one bit about what PP thinks is an "appropriate" conversion. If you're of a similar opinion, then by all means, go all-out on your conversion. If you DO care, then you need to decide if going ahead with the conversion anyway and simply not being allowed to use it in "official" games is something you're okay with.

Yeah, I'm not sure how active the official tournament scene is around here. I'm sure I'll pick up the actual Bucaneer model at some point just to throw in when necessary.
I'll be changing my original plan anyway after putting my Firefly together today. That thing is huge. It's barely smaller than my metal Ironclad, and I'm considering using the plastic Lancer legs as the basis of my beefed up Stormclad conversion.

Cloud Gatherer: Essentially, yes. It would be a more significant conversion than just a weapon swap though to emphasis the salvaged nature of the model. I do like the idea of basing it on the Hunter chasis though.

I'm a firm believer that almost any conversion idea can be pulled off if executed well. For the lancer turned buccaneer idea try making a different head for it, carving a few dents in the chassis, and maybe even adding riveted metal plates as if they were patches. Make sure the spear is noticeably different and maybe add some classic asymmetric merc armor plating and spikes (but not too thick armor, maybe make them look damaged). Finally, when you paint it, try to convey it's a salvaged junker on it's last legs and has clearly lost some of it's stat line from when it was in cygnaran service. Lots of rust over a distinctly non-cygnar paintjob. If you want to press it back into cygnar's service a small seal with the swan authorizing it as "not a hazard" riveted on would suffice. "Your mechanics think that one's a junker? That limp and the busted node don't matter, it still moves on it's own!"

I have never been to an event where a decent proxy was a problem. I made a Renegade out of a grind model and it was acceptable to the TO. At bigger/regional events it will be a problem.

If you wanted the old Cygnar look you could use a Talon light warjack. You could replace the tip of the spear with the Buccaneer gaff, and the talon's left hand is already in a fist ready to hold a net. That, or you could just slap the Buccaneer arms o the Nomad and call it good.
