    Default Hardest Models to Paint/Assemble

    Hey

I thought it would be fun, perhaps cathartic if we listed models that have given us fits in terms of assembly or painting. I think this might also be helpful for new players so they know what to watch out for.

I'm still trying to figure out what I want to play, so not many stories from me. I had some Knights Exemplar and they were rather annoying to work with. Exemplar Errants looked rather formidable too, but very nice looking.

It was a massive pain for me to put together my Harbinger of Menoth model. I absolutely love the sculpt, and think the model looks fantastic, but it was a pain to put together. Trying to bend the cloth into shape and have it stick to the base took awhile. Also the banner pole is made of VERY thin metal, so I had to remove it and replace it with brass rod. Trying to line up her minders also wasn't easy. Again, a beautiful looking model once it is completed, but getting there takes some doing.

I would have to say my Nyss Hunters were a pain to put together.

Wolves of Orboros. The models themselves are very nice but also very detailed. Painting 12 at one time was simply a bear. It took me months of painting them, walking away, then painting some more. Now I have 4 more models to do. I'm not looking forward to it.
The forums seem to have one of two responses to new models. (A) "This model is worthless, I'll never use it." or (B) "That model is over powered, it's going to break the game." A few models get both responses, which ends up being really hilarious.
But what's wrong with saying "This model is circumstantially good and it's up to me as a good player to exploit its strengths and minimize its weaknesses"?

Cyclops Savage! I finally got sick of trying to line up all four holes for his arms and hands and just glued them together and green stuffed it as best I could.

I am just finishing up painting 2 units of trencher infantry, 1 unit of commandos, and all the unit attachments. I'm going slightly mad from painting all the teenie tiny pouches, grenades, and gadgets.

10 Nyss hunters is just torture! It's so hard to pin the two handed sword arm guys together. Once that's done there is quivers, heads, sword sheaths...not to mention the sword hilts to the sword sheaths.... and finding room on their backs for all that stuff. The guys wielding swords also have bows to attach on the back with the quiver and sword sheath.

Absolute pain in the arse, after drilling and pinning all the parts I made a preliminary dry fit attempt at one of the two handed sword guys arms and played around a bit and imagined gluing at the same time. I decided to put them back in the box for a bit. It's been well over a month since.

Cyclops Savage. So much of a pita for the 2 in the battlebox and constantly messing up and swapping arms that i finally decided to test a back banner pinning technique on one to ensure it would work for my brute. So i took it and dropped it 5+ times and the banner stayed pinned onto the back.

Oh and the butt flap stayed on too after i pinned it during all 5 or so drops. I was impressed!

I ended up just ordering a single savage blister so i didn't have to worry about the arm issue .

Edit: I HOPE Skorne can see a plastic cyclops kit down the road to make either brute or savage.

Brute is just so much better as far as the mold was cut compared to the savage.

Pinning flags, tons of filling, two contact points, more flags, more filling....
Then painting all the freakin' filigree...I hate Skorne...

See, i've had so many people tell me to just leave off flag but for me it is a big attraction to the army so I asked a really good converter around here on some techniques for my Cyclops which MAY still work on troops but, drill into the back and use a paper clip wrap it around the banner and glue it so it won't move. Then glue the banners 2 contact points and the paper clip part that will go into the body.

I tested this method and dropped a savage 5+ times arms broke off, hand/sword broke off, base broke off, head broke off. Flag and Butt flap stayed on!

The Gladiator i Opted to just put pins into the body and drill holes into the banners contact points so i can slide it on and off as need.

However, my biggest issue now is since the pewter is so soft the upper part of my brutes banner/flag is about to snap off leaving the actually bottom still connected so i am thinking i might need to drill into the flag and just replace it with a brass rod and drill into the bottom part and replace that too.

Angelius, hands down the most annoying model I've dealt with. Massive wings that attach at two little points. And to add insult to injury, a pound of model connected to the base by a dimple and a dot of glue the diameter of a pencil eraser. Ugh, never again.

I can't say I've painted anything that I hated to paint. Then again, I've only painted a tiny fraction of what I own.

Assembly? Blighted Freaking Nyss Archers. Tiny, skinny little arms, and then all the other crap you're supposed to put on them. I imagine they have many of the same problems that the Nyss Hunters are so famous for. Honorable mention goes to Karchev for his wonky original pose and that damned rail the skirt attaches to. That huge thing is really supposed to attach to his butt by those two little nubs? Really?

Currently, the Deathjack. Waaaay to top heavy and waaaay to many individual pieces that don't seem to like me....

Ive also had problems with Bane Knights. They aren't too hard to assemble, but their friggin spears/swords/whatever the hell you want to call them keep breaking and bending. I'm eventually gonna have to replace them with brass rods.

Cryx. Anything Cryx. I had everything for a T4 Morty list and it would not stay together. Models were pinned, Greenstuffed and glued and a stiff breeze would break it. I haven't gone back to those models in months. If I ever do, everything will need pins. Even the stiff that should not.

Nyss Hunters were a pretty big pain. Did a min unit for a friend, and in the end I left off most of the extra sheaths/bows/whatever.

MoW Demo Corp are annoying... and I suppose anything with the "4 contact point" arms is just as bad. Trying to line up and glue two shoulders and two wrists to two separate hands all at the same time is a nightmare. I have a unit of 5, and at some point they're getting redone. Not anytime soon though.

Tharn ladies seem to be pretty annoying too, simply because they're such tiny little models. The two Bloodweavers that need their arms glued on.... holy crap. I managed to pin the longer, straight arm. No idea how well the bent arm will stay on, since I don't think I have drill bits and pins small enough. Hope and a prayer.

I make dice bags and paint/play with toy soldiers.

Deathjack. I took several hard looks at the pile of metal laid out before me, thought through the whole process and then, satisfied that I had theoretically assembled it, boxed it and put it on my desk.

I've managed to avoid the units everyone complains about (Nyss hunters, Steelheads). I guess the worst I've done are Uhlans. They're just in so many freakin' pieces, and you've got to pin that lance if you want it to last more than 5 mintues.

Anything that has a double handed weapon (or rifle) AND THREE CONNECTION POINTS! Ala the Champion Hero....ye gods! Just getting his arms lined up was a nightmare. Big builds don't bother me, I accept them for a project and move on. Small models that are badly cast, they annoy me.

Adding another call out to the Nyss hunters being a pain to assemble. Tiny arms and contact points for the 2 handed swords. On the painting side Reeves and Wolves are a bit tough but nothing I have ran into was all that tough as to not really want to do it.

I can't complain about the Carnivean -- there's plenty of room for the pins to go -- but pinning the arm on my Shepherd was... tense.

yeah, so far I have to agree with the "anything SKORNE" comments. If it's not filling gaps, it's trying to do assembly with two hands when you need at the bare minimum, four! The idea of having to put the cyclops together is still eating me apart. I've done a couple warbeasts, and with the exception of the Extreme Titan, the gaps are really stupid on them all. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the Extreme and how well it went together, but that's an exception to the "skorne assembly stinks" rule! ;-)

Mortenebra and Deyliss. Hands down. My god the legs, the legs! Make it stop.

I just put mine together and I am going to have nightmares about that model for weeks now. And will be afraid to look at it crosswise for fear it will come apart.

Stormguard.... a full unit of lining up both hands on the double handed weapons and figuring out which angle of weapon went with which body sculpt.... absolute pain

Painting wise, I couldnt stand paint a full commandos with max wa. They still arent finished because i cant stand going back to painting all those fiddly little details on them.

Most involved single model...definitely the Harbinger...AGGGHHHH...and the flag...if you don't replace it or support it, it WILL collapse, no matter what you do (and anyone who says differently is lying...has to be).
Unit... Nyss hunters, until I learned to pin the bow through the quiver and into the back...then it was simple and fast...
but the Harbinger still haunts me in my dreams......

Top candidates I think many people can agree with:

    1. Nyss Hunters. Though fairly easy to paint, takes divine levels of patience to assemble. I pinned every head and arm of those suckers.

    2. Cyrx spider-jacks. I don't want to talk about my experience putting those helljacks together. I think I'll start going into flashbacks.

    3. Insert your own. Titan Gladiator's sheer amount of necessary gap filling could easily earn this slot.

the worst i have done so far are the MoW Demoliton Corps. Correcting the MoW lean is the minor problem. The real problem are the arms that don't fit with the torso nor with the weapons.

It depends, I know those first run Stormblades in the leader/trooper blisters were a freaking nightmare.

The nastiness was freaking legs seperate from the torso, two separate arms stubbs that connected to the sword/torso and the damn bucklers that loved to fall off. God, I hated assembling those Stormblade models more than Steelheads or Nyss.
