Default Calaban feat turn time issues

So I've been loving Calaban. I mean really enjoying playing him.

But I've run into one big issue with him... against an infantry heavy force where Calaban really seems to shine his feat turn seems to take absolutely forever. Even if I have a general game plan of what spells I want to toss out... the sheer volume of casting gets a little crazy. I've twice now pretty much wiped out an entire cryx infantry swarm with him, but it seems like my turns are taking way too long... easily 20 minutes. This is fine for friendly play but clearly not if I ever take him to a tourney.

Any input on how to mitigate the time suck of his brutal feat turn?

That's what I'm running into. The only substantive advice/ideas I have right now are to make sure you reserve your time extension for resolving his feat turn when you're in the Steamroller environment.

That and practice. There are old threads (use the search tool) on how to play faster and some good tips/tricks like rolling to hit and damage together with different colored dice, etc... But you've got to practice the techniques to get the most out of them.

Prioritize your activations on feat turn, and don't be afraid to just run stuff if they're not important. Yeah, theoretically that Swamp Gobber or whatever might roll all sixes and gank an enemy model but most of the time you can skip long-shot attacks and you're not giving up much. Same goes for extra attacks. If your Gatormen are charging something with super high ARM, maybe just roll their charge attacks and skip their second non-boosted attacks if they need 10+ to hurt something.

Know your army well, and streamline the list to fewer models if you're having time problems. If it's ONLY on feat turn then you likely are streamlined enough, but if you run into time issues all the time work on it.

Don't worry as much about picking optimal targets for every spell you cast on feat turn. Just do it, there's no time to ponder.

Also, start timing your feat turn. Don't go by feel on how long it's taking or whether you're improving. Measure it. Then you know how much more you've got to go and how aggressive the measures you need to take have to be.

Seems like a lame thing for me to complain about really...

"This sucks, my caster is just killing too much stuff."

I think itemizing prime targets and making sure those go down first and letting the rest slide if time starts running low is probably the best answer. Sucks to leave models standing, but at least you took down primary threats.

I totally know what you're talking about. Epic Butcher is the same way. His feat turn can take some serious amounts of time.
