Default Help painting a marble stone effect

Can anyone here give me some direction on how to paint marble stone effects on stuff? Or maybe point me somewhere that can show me. I'm at a loss as to how to get the delicately understated swirls to look correct.

This is a pretty good marble tutorial.
    Hope it helps!

Not bad at all. Anyone have any real-world experience or tips they can offer? I see Vlad has marblish effects on his shoulders in the PP studio schemes. Anyone dared to emulate that?

I found that marble link long ago too- it is pretty helpful. The sponge idea works well for some of the mottled effects you'll find in marble, but remember there are so many kinds of marble, some are speckled, some swirled, some striated, some a combo of all.. do a google image search. I also checked out marble counter websites to get ideas.

This is still my favorite marble I did- actually i think its the only thing i ever got around to posting on coolmini. I used a bit of the sponge technique for some areas, kept paint thin and blended in the yellow areas, and for the banding, run your line rather thick, then wet blend it out & down, mixing in the base color to blend it in from the other direction. add veins with thinned paint of near-white after. I'm kicking myself I didn't take pictures in process- next time I do a big marble piece I will have to remember to do it, since I was pleased with the result.

@LaughingFerret - that's incredible work! That effect is closer to what I'm hoping to achieve. We'll see how it goes. Your help plus the link above should get me as close as I'm going to get for a first try. Thanks much, gents.

Take pics once you've tried it out. I'd love to see how it turns out.

Here's ANOTHER link to how to paint a marble look. Plus they did it without using a sponge.

I rather have fun and lose, then play an army based purely on pie charts and statistical probabilities.

Now I'm trying to translate that (awesome) tutorial into a sort of off-white cream marble. Start with Bleached Bone, and go to white, with some color brown or gray lines? Then what color would the glaze be at the end?

    Wow, that looks awesome.

I'm looking for that same effect for my Ancestral Guardians/Immortals. Have you done any more work with Marble since?
