So in the slow-grow league at my FLGS, I faced a Madrak brick with Barnabas yesterday. The Troll player is relatively new to the game but he's quickly getting the hang of the brick. I almost had a chance to win but it took throwing everything I had it and still couldn't crack it.
The biggest issue is the spell Sure Foot. Madrak usually casts this on himself, sits in the middle of his army (behind a wall of Champions), and everything with 3" gets +2 DEF and can't be knocked down, which completely negates Barnabas's feat.
He had his Krielstone Bearers behind and on the flanks of his brick so I charged a couple of them and the Champs with my Gatormen to try to trigger Warpath to get the Wrastler up there. A Tough roll and minimal damage to the Champs later, no Warpath for me.
I was ultimately able to get rid of the Champs but it took a couple of turns and by then, my Gators were gone. I changed my tactics a bit mid-game and charged his Impaler with Barnabas to give Madrak Fury management problems. The Impaler was just out of range of Sure Foot so I popped my feat but after some very bad damage rolls, I couldn't kill it.
Any thoughts on dealing with brick lists with Barnabas? My first thought was to use Calaban, which I might try next time, but that doesn't help Barnabas. I think I made a couple of mistakes:
- Charging with my Gatormen before my full force was in position. When you finally commit to engaging the brick, you better be able to put a dent in it. The brick will always win the attrition battle.
- Not getting my Wrastler up fast enough. The Wrastler was my primary way of cracking armor and it was a round behind my Gators.
- Getting greedy. I didn't need to charge so early. I was hoping Iron Flesh + Dirge of Mists would be enough protection but Champs can get to MAT 9 with Carnage. Madrak's feat makes it even more brutal.
Next time around, I think I would make more use of Swamp Pit to slow the brick down even more. Trolls have a few ways to get Pathfinder but if the player wanted to break the brick to charge, I'd almost be ok with that.
Any other thoughts?
