Default What do you bring on Roadtrips?

Over on my Blog I'm stuck regarding which models I should take to GenCon. Like last year, I am traveling a long way, and have to travel lighter than normal (family reasons). I got room for a handful of 'jacks and about 30 warrior models.

Any advice what units/'jacks/solos are absolutely essential? I'm thinking I'll bring Sorcha, Strak, and Vlad. Other Warcasters need to make the cut. I also expect to bring a unit of Doomies and widowmakers - but after that, I'm not sure.

The good thing is that I will be playing with my buddies and in friendly pickup games, so swinging the occasional "counts as" probably isnt a deal-breaker. Its the reason I am only bringing one of each of the Warcasters I note above - my buddies wont care if I say during one game that the model is pVlad and in another game he is eVlad (f'rex). That said, even when I do counts-as models, I really strongly prefer they at least look a little bit like the model they are replacing.

So, thoughts? Any seasoned tourney players or travelers out there that want to remind me not to forget a particular model(s)?

If you are planning on being in the tourneys you need to make sure you have the right models. They won't allow any proxies in gen con tourneys.

Yeah, like I mention above, I'm not. We are running our own little storyline tourney Friday evening. A couple proxies wont be a problem.

I'd bring 2/3 casters, an multi purpose troops and jacks. You'll want to have a flexible force of models that you can make slightly variable lists with so you don't get bored or burned out running the same models over and over again.

Do you mix up your lists a lot? Most people I know have a few go-to units that figure in 9 out of 10 lists they play. Look at what you play with all three of the casters you're taking and start from there. Also, are your jacks magnetized?

Yeah 'jacks are magentized, so thats useful. My go-tos are Doomies and Widowmakers - so they are definitely coming. I'm on the fence with Alexa and her merry band. I love using her and the undead, but thats a lot of models.

    Gaming purposes:
You've highlighted what I would do. I would bring 2 goto to units, not including the Alexia / Risen as they are a huge unit to bring. I would also bring all those magnetized jacks. I would have steam roller calibre lists, and just bring those along with dice, rule book, tape measure, counters, beads, rule books. I have a standard case. Its a heavy plastic case that is about 16 x16 x10, which fits 2 rulebooks, tournment tray, dice, tape, models for 2 lists. I love it. It goes in the trunk for road trips for games.

    Non gaming purposes:
Superglue. I put this here as its pretty handy weather gaming or not. Clean clothes. Chewing gum. Hard candy. Sour patch kids.. tasty, and come in handy in a lot of methods depending what you ate the day before. Hand de sanitizer. Just saying... we have all been in the gaming shop with either poor body odor / people that don't shower OR the to few equipped bathroom at the gaming store. Oh, home depot has these travel size toilet paper, I bring them for camping and to weekend gaming conventions, they go in the figure case. Again.. just in case, better to be prepared!
    Searforge should have Bear Cav.

That's good but those are not usually units you build a list around, certainly not the WM (how many Doomies are we talking about, a single unit or more than one?). Or do you often forego an infantry core altogether? No WG, IFP, Kayazy even? MoWs (small units)? If you tend to use Alexia for that, I'd bite the bullet and find a way to fit them in your travel chest. None of your three preferred casters (except maybe for Vlad) is often seen without a good chunk of infantry. If those 30 warrior models are an absolute limit that'll become tight though. Take 10 out of your 30 (6 Doomies + 4 WM) + 3-4 solos and you're down to 16-17 infantry models - 13-14 if your casters need to fit in there too. I take it you won't be bringing 21 models for Raise Dead?

You hit the nail on the head - Doomies are my go-tos in terms of infantry. I have this weird hang-up about furry hats (hate 'em*) so I stay away from WG. I'm not very high on IFPs any more since the nerfing. I dont use MoWs (yet... I'm waiting on the plastics)... that basically leaves Kayazy (yay!) and Doomies. With those two options, thats a lot of squishiness that I try to cover for by using my fair share of 'jacks.

Yeah, raise dead. Ugh. Okay, maybe the kayazy should get the nod. Alexia looks to be out of the rotation this time (I am sure my buddies will be happy to hear that).

    * yes, I know how odd it is to NOT like furry hats and end up a Khador player. Thats just how I am.
