I've been putting this off for a long while, but I bit the bullet due to some encouraging comments on my blog.
So here we are - My Retribution so far (except, for some reason, the Griffon, which I forgot to photograph)

I really like the scheme. It gives a cold winter look.
But how did you paint them? It looks like you colored them with colored pencils? I can't quite place the brush stroke technique.
"Oh, you think continuous Fire is your ally. You merely adopted the POW 12. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see a d6 result of 1 or 2 until I was already a man. By then, it was nothing to me but Focus for EFEORA!"
-Testament/Bane
I use some drybrushing to blend/highlight colours, that might be the effect you can see
I know I may get slated for drybrushing, but my hands aren't very steady, and I have Dyspraxia, so my spatial awareness is pretty lousy, and I suck at steady lines/highlights. Stick to what you know I guess
Thanks for the comment![]()

Slated for drybrushing..... valid painting tool. There is a gentleman that had a thread of cryx models that were nothing but inks and drybrushing, and they looked amazing.
Your models look great. Stick with what works like you said. No one is going to think any less of your painting skills because YOU prefer to drybrush your models. Its YOUR army, YOU like the way it looks. And so do I for that matter.
Keep up the good work!
PS. This is probably one of my favorite ret schemes I have seen so far. I love the grey and blue.

Great color choices! This really helps for my planned retribution scheme, athough I'll be more or less inverting your scheme using predominantly blue with grey trim. It's great to see these colors work so well together on Retribution models. Nice painting!
You can control your instincts, but you cannot escape your nature.
Thanks man, glad I could help ;p

I really like that combination of cold greys and blue.
It won't be long before I pick up a few Retribution models, and I was thinking about a sort of terracotta sceme.
Thanks for messing up my plans.![]()
Loving the scheme. Looks really nice especially with the snow bases.

You get two thumbs up from me, Lofty. I still like to drybrush now and then, especially where metals are concerned. As has been said, if it works for you, and you're happy with the results, then don't take any guff about it.

I beleive JTY's drybrushed Cryx are the ones referenced. Check them out here:

TBH mate there is nothing wrong with your army at all. Drybrushing has its place and if it means you are playing fully painted so much the better.
Its a tidy look, a solid scheme and strong basing. These are the marks of an excellent painted army.
Little details like the pink hair and the blue glow/glaze make the army step up even more.
Keep on painting.
Cheers.
Jon.
...legends tell of a mythical pirate captain by the name of Johnny Bones. Captain of the damned ship The Golden Thrall, doomed to forever navigate the murky waters of the seven seas trading mild innuendo and painting tips in every port he calls at...
Base, slop on the ink, drybrush. That's my painting in a nutshell, and it turns out fine for what I want... which is a decent-looking piece for tabletop. Nothing at all wrong with getting a piece done that looks great and didn't require weeks of eyestrain to make a model that looks AWESOME but you wouldn't play with it in a million years.![]()
All that to say, "These look great, don't sweat the drybrushing, you're not alone!"![]()
I like the winter look, and how not much other people or any at all did this and posted pics up here makes ur army loook unique.Very nice job
These make me almost not hate Ret models (Just don't like how the models look in general, big bulky metal pantaloons, not my thing). Color looks very good though, as a previous poster said, it looks kinda like colored pencil which is a weird complement, but intended as such, makes them stand out and unique, and is amazing on the cloak of the first warcaster.
The texture work on the armour and the two-tone Myrmidons actually make them look decent. Very well done. Retribution painters take note - multiple tones make your faction look good, slabs of single colour make your faction look rubbish, and texture in paint-jobs brings the win.
I'm an achiever! I achieve things!
I blog at the House of Paincakes, every Friday.
Sometimes I even write about Warmachine/Hordes.
Choice of alternate color scheme seems pretty okay. How many more models would you have to paint up?
They look good bro, Don't be down on yourself about Dry Brushing, they look sexy, and they are done. No man should give you trouble for that.
I think your color choice was really good.
Gdaybloke - thanks for the support mateyour 'trib have been a real inspiration, especially when I was deciding what to do with the jacks.
PG_Dancingmonkey - Thanks man, I've not been in any wargaming hobby for a couple of years due to moving around, but before that I posted on a forum related to other miniatures, and my painting style wasn't received too well, I guess some hobbies breed elitism right?
Silopolis - I enjoy painting, and the method I sue helps me to get results that I am pleased with, and get them fastI tend to lose patience pretty quick so fast results is the only thing that keeps me in the game ;p
Grimmark - When I was reading the fluff in the beginning of the Forces book, I was thinking, that if they were trudging round Khador looking for their god, they're going to need to blend into the background, and BAM icy blues and greys
Jaster - Thanks a lot, I spent ages on that cloak!
Kaptain Von - Thanks mate, too kind ;p I spent a long time trying to get the shoulders of the Myrmidons to look "good"
Valech - I have infront of me right now; both UAs for the dawnguard, and a Scyir all primed and basecoated. a Gorgon who is half built, a Chimera and a magister in the post, and Rahn plus two arcanists awaiting stock before dispatch
After that it will be both units of houseguard with UAs, though not both at once ;p
Thanks again guys, I'm going to try and get the Scyir done this weekend, and will add pics of him with the Griffon that was left out when I get chance. It's my girlfriends Birthday this weekend though, so I'm not at home much.
Cheers
Lofty

More replies than I can reply to, lol
DemonCalibre - Thanks mate, I spent a long time thinking about colour combos. It was pretty difficult as a new starter to Warmachine, as I didn't know too much about the Iron Kingdoms etc. I think it suits these guys though
Valech - The blues is a mix of GW blues and their Asurmen blue wash. On the Jacks it is enchanted blue, wash, ice blue, then space wolves grey. On the Dawnguard, its ice blue, wash then space wolves grey then white. I wanted the power sources to look distinctly different on the infantry versus the large metal constructs![]()

Maybe it's not technically the best work ever, but It's the best scheme colour I've ever seen for retribution, even better that PP one.
I love them!
Thanks manI'm glad the scheme goes together as well as I thought it would

Sorry for the double post but for some reason, any text I include with the above images constitutes a fifth image, so I am not allowed to post :S
Anyhow - Griffon and Scyir, Griffons halberd was bent when I got it, so I drilled it out and replaced it with brass rod

Wait, what's wrong with drybrushing again?
I'm pretty sure I drybrush basically everything I paint. I thought it was a valid painting technique D:
Plaudite, amici, comedia finita est.
Alot of the elitest "golden deamon caliber" painters tend to look down on it. Most likely because it's rather easy to learn and gives decent results as opposed to layering with thin layers which is arguably harder and is also arguably harder to master.
Myself, I'm a huge fan of drybrushing.
Hey, can't argue with quick results that look solid, and to a laymen, look almost the same (yes, a trained eye can tell). Drybrushes look great on the table, that's what matters to me.
I think the DryBrushing works well with them - gives them a slightly weathered/snowed on look that gives me the chills just looking at them.
I don't know the Ret models well enough to name them, but I really like the guy in post #28, really nice effects on him!
NICE.
ANy chance of a group shot?
Kalitori/Tamirelo - I discovered a lot of negative opinions of dry brushing when I first posted pictures on a forum for another games company. I never heard amy dfferent so I had assumed that this opinion was a popular one.
Thanks for proving me wrong
Jaster - tabletop looks is what I'm after, and I think they will look pretty good together, if I say so myself
JustinKase - that guy is a dawnguard scyir, my most recently finished model, thanks for the comment. The blue in the scheme is meant to look a little powdery like you say, it wasn't done on purpose the first time though! Heh
Thecsharian - thanks! It will have to be this reeked when I do a group shot, it's pretty dark when I get back home from work
Thanks for all the comments guys![]()

Group shots as requested, blazing sunshine outside, so it was the perfect opportunity. Also featuring special sneak peak of ACTION POSE GORGON tm, coming to a Plog near you in February!
Apologies for the heavy shadows, I'm very much an amateur photographer

I'm pretty pleased with these two, It's been a very long week at work, and I felt like I was pretty wired while painting these but it seems to have come out ok. Next up on the painting table is Dawnguard UA, and I'm still waiting for my next parcel form Maelstrom, stay tuned![]()
