    Default Zack1bt's Demonic Circle project

    Hello all!

I've decided to paint up a 35-pt Kromac list full of red-skinned demon Tharn and lots of lava. I'm taking my time with each model to make it look the best I can, and will turn this into a nice painting showcase I hope. The list itself featured some of my favorite Circle models in a fairly decent playable force (I hope). I'm not sure if I'll keep it once I'm done with it, but so far I'm having fun painting it.

    Here's the list:
    Kromac
    -Gnarlhorn Satyr
    -Warpwolf Stalker
    Tharn Ravagers (6)
    -Tharn Chieftan
    Tharn Bloodtrackers (6)
    -Nuala The Huntress
    Tharn Ravager White Mane

So far I have one Tharn Ravager trooper, Kromac's human form, and the Chieftan painted.

Amazing bases. The figures are nice too but those bases really stand out.

In fact they might stand out a bit too much. You might want to add a few brighter colors onto the models themselves. But nice work overall.

That's pretty cool, I never thought about how well those models lend themselves to being painted as demons.

Having them painted red like that.. reminds me of japanese art work showing demons.. they seem to be red too! The Lava looks amazing! Have you thought about do some light source highlighting on the models.. where the glow of the lava would appear on them.

    Thanks for the kind comments.

Yes, I wanted to do some OSL for the lava, but wasn't really sure how to cast the correct light/colors. I'm going to try some of my other Ravagers with some brighter red skin to see if that helps with the light balance.

I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do about these three though. Since the horn/bone/wood/stone colors are all Citadel Washes, they are quite fragile and prone to scraping off, so I already sealed them. How well does painting over sealant and re-sealing work?

    Cool idea
I kinda like that the models are pretty dark, I think with OSL that would really pop.
One thing though, I think they look very glossy, you might want to use different sealants for different parts of the figs, to give some illusion of different textures. Like a matte varnish over the bones etc, it helps if you want to make the figs look less flat (if that's what ure after then never mind).

If you're unsure about painting OSL, I like this page http://blog.brushthralls.com/?page_id=1916 for tips on OSL painting, really good step-by-step instructions. I found it really helpful in how to build up the colors, made it seem much easier than I previously thought it to be.

Does it come off correctly that the pale parts are human flesh, or does that get lost?

Beautiful blends but the shine, the glare, that's gotta go. Could just be the light tho. I had this problem with photographing a number of FoW Shermans I painted some time ago. What are you using to seal them?

Here's my Tharn White Mane. He's not sealed in these pics, I'll try to get a final shot if people are interested though.

I also tried to do a little OSL, which you can see best on the axe.

Hey everyone, I've been away from the painting world for awhile, but now I'm back and putting paint on minis for the Journyman League. I'll be posting pictures of my WIP and finished work when I have time.

Thanks for all of the C&C!

These are awesome! I definitely think the OSL is a good idea. It would emphasize the basing while still drawing attention back to the model itself, which is a win-win. I would also agree with TheInfidel; I know you mentioned you were using matte finish but something's still coming out glossy. I love the demonic scheme!

    NO!

Don't use Krylon. More people have had problems with Krylon than almost any other brand. Krylon makes GW spray paints, and their matte finishes often end up making models look dusty. I HIGHLY recommend Testors dull coat. They're a modeling company, which means their products are designed exclusively with the idea that they be used on models, as opposed to Krylon that make them for general use.

My experience is just the opposite, there's no way I'd touch another can of Testors. I think if you did a search you'd see that the majority of the foggy model complaints are from users of Testors Dull Coat. If you use the Krylon Clear then Matt it will still leave a slight shine, I use just the Matt in 2 coats and also if I feel a particular part is prone to heavy wear then I use a brush on matt varnish to thicken up those layers even more.

    You guys are both wrong...

All brands for Matte Varnish work because they all use the same "recipe". People who get "foggy" results did not use the spray right. Not enough shaking, wrong shaking, didn't wait for the right weather to spray... something like that.

Basically, the only important thing in chosing a Varnish Spray is that it explicitly says "Acryllic .... Varnish". As long as it says that you get the same thing from all vendors. It's like with "original italian pasta" - chose the cheapest brand because it HAS TO contain exactly the same ingredients

I second Rogue Sun's comments. I've been using Testor's dull cote for about 10 years and have never had an issue with frosting on my models. Granted, I've never tried Krylon but I've never had a reason to switch from Testors.

The thing about Testors though is that it doesn't really protect the model against chipping very well so I will use a paint on gloss varnish (I just use a Liquitex Satin finish) and just use it to hit the areas of the model that will be susceptible to chipping and/or touching. I'll typically apply 2 thin coats of the gloss to these areas then hit the whole model with Dull Cote.

I have used Testors and it didn't work out very well for me personally. Krylon has been great, but I have been thinking about hitting my models with another pass of the Matte.

Oh, and the beasts are looking really cool The Feral is done, I'm just putting him on his base now (and of course the arm fell off >< the one part I didn't pin), and the Argusi (?) are almost done. Kaya just needs her base painted and sealed.

Thanks for all of the replies guys! It's a great motivator. =]
I just got the rest of my models on Tuesday, and I already have my Bloodtrackers based and primed, Nuala based and primed (though she didn't ship with her spear pack), my Stalker built, based, and primed, and the Gorax built.

Haha, not much fluff yet. I really wanted to do a Tharn army and just paint it really good. My inspiration came from one of the No Quarters, one of the PP Staff has a demonic Circle army.

I was trying to figure out what to do with my furred friends and then it hit me: hell-hounds xD

Here's Kaya, one Argus, and my poor Feral. Straps and things are in purple, and don't show up very well. I also did some shading with Coal Black on the feral but it doesn't show very well either.

Of course I mind! Blarghy blargh blargh!

=] go for it, since I stole and modified the theme from someone else. Eventually I might pick up a Cassius/Wurmwood, seems like it would look pretty good.

The skin/fur on these guys isn't straight black, I did shading with Coal Black and a wash of Badab Black, but it doesn't show up in the pictures.

Just as a pic quality suggestion but you should take your pics with the models having a white back ground and above light.

How do you get that black if its not straight black? it looks very nice

That's a good point, and may make the black pop a bit better. I did that with my earlier pics, I was just excited to put up some painted pics of my freshly sealed dudes.

The black is a base coat of Thamar Black, a layer of highlighting on most raised surfaces with Coal Black, leaving the muscle crevices (?) Thamar Black. I used GW Badab Black wash on all of the skin/fur, blending the Thamar and Coal blacks.

    Disaster strikes!

I picked up a can of Army Painter Anti-Shine and tried it out on my models. Foolishly, I did not use a test model before hand.
It blured some shading, especially the black fur, and created a huge white patch on my Feral. Going to attempt repairs and post results.

    Wish me luck!

Well, sadly it doesn't look like there is too much I can do with my poor Feral. I'll try painting over it, but it's just kind of a mess..
In happier news, I'm just waiting for my Stalker's sword arm to dry before I seal him up and he'll be done =]

    Pics to come soon.
