The more pictures the better as far as I am concerned. I used CD's as they are cheaper than plasticard and don't involve any cutting. As I haven't actually used them in a game I am not sure how they work out. I can't see there being too much of a problem. I do pack the base as much as possible though so its not like the rock is floating in the middle of nothing else on the base.
Cork can be bought in any large pet store that deals with snakes and lizards. Its most often used in a Terrarium. I guess you can get it on amazon.co.uk here if you can't find it elsewhere. It's only 300g but that should get you plenty for a few bases worth of terrain.
