    Default Newbie Newbie Newbie

I was in my local game store (Just by Chance), debating with a friend. I play WHFB and was really longing for something else, and he suggested Warmachines. I had to admit I liked the look of them a lot better.

When I got to the register the clerk was really keen to hook me up with the local play group, and was also quite happy with my decision (it was, in her opinion, a better game). So I've got the main book and looking forward to crushing skulls and rending iron!

Welcome to the forums and the games!

And personally, I agree with the store clerk, but only because I did GW games for over a decade, and haven't looked back since I started Warmachine/Hordes.

If you've got any questions, give us a holler!

I 100% agree with that store clerk. I have played Warhammer, 40k and Fantasy... 40k was most horrific rule juggling I have ever done. Warmachine is very straight forward and for the most part balanced.

Welcome to the forums and the Iron Kingdoms.

I too really enjoy the straight forwardness of WarmaHordes.

Yeah, Warmachine/Hordes plays like a dream compared to other clunkier games systems from ages past. A well-oiled synergistic and murderous dream, that is, which kills you when you're not paying attention.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Warmachine (ok, ok... hordes too)!

Have you picked a faction yet? If not, I would definitely suggest reading up what fluff you can from the rulebook.
Everyone else please chip in (as my opinion isn't all encompassing) In EXTREME general, the factions:

Cygnar- We have more bullets! But we can also assault like crazy if need be. Cygnar is insanely technologically advanced, and pretty fun to play, both with and against, since they get pretty neat perks. Cygnar is the electric faction.

Cryx- We are undead! Spammable light warjacks and plenty of hitting power. Cryxan infantry units are great. They are generally fast, hard hitting melee units. Cryx corrodes people over time, and turns your dead guys into more soldiers!

Menoth- (My personal favorite) BURN HERETIC!!!! We have plenty of things to light stuff on fire, and deal out damage over time. Hordes of expendable soldiers who are weaponmasters is our trademark, as is buffs and denial (to our enemies). Melee is our specialty!

Khador- For the motherland! Khador brings slow warjacks to the table who can both dish out and receive incredible amounts of damage. They like to stick it to the face... with an axe. They will also freeze you in place to make it easier to kill you.

Retribution- You know those rules you read? Yeah, we don't really have to follow them... Ret likes to have really cool special rules that grant them options not granted to anybody else. Their jacks and stuff are really cool, and can be tricky to fight.

Now, all you need to do is hurry on down to your friendly local plastic-crack dealer, I mean, friendly local gaming store, and pick up a battlebox set, as they are possibly the easiest way to put the rules into practice, and are super cheap!
"...by the powers vested in me by his holiness Hierarch Severius, blessed spiritual leader of Menoth's people, I hereby sentence thee to spiritual purification. BURN HERETIC!"

So far I've picked up the Khador book - the Khador being big, bulky and tough is what appeal to me personally. My next question is - where to start. I have the main rule book, the Khador book, a warjack kit and I've ordered the battle box. I want to build a force quickly for small games to get used to the rules, what would be a next good acquisition? Winter Guard?

There are some excellent threads on the Khador forum you should take a look at (definitely the starter guide GlassJaw wrote).

The traditional step from battlebox to 15 points is adding a unit of Widowmakers. Winter Guard (assuming Infantry here, although I'm quite partial to the Rifle Corps myself and don't play the WGI) are good, but you'll want the full getup, which means the UA and Kovnik Joseph Grigorovich - without them, you get what you pay for and it's a dirt cheap unit in points. What is really going to determine your best next acquisition is the caster you want to play. A lot of players consider pSorsha a walking feat and nothing more, so she tends to get phased out early fairly often. An extra caster may be a good way to spend some money.
