Red face Cygnar Alternate Colour Scheme

    Hello there,

having started a small Cygnar army for demo-games, I wanted to use a different as usual colour scheme and train a little bit on OSL.

Jice_'s scheme simply proved to be the right example for what I had in mind, therefore I went that way with my army.

Feel free to comment on the pics:

    Aaaand... that's it...!

    Nice!

Though I do think that, because of the cooler colour scheme, the blue glow of the arc node does come out a tad strongly. Then again, it could be the lighting. Perhaps a little wash would tone it down.

I agree too, base markings are awesome.

No offense but those base markings would drive me insane in a game. The colors keep going after the mark ends...

I really like the colors on Stryker. The sword blade looks great (fantastic lightning effect) and the blue glow on the armor is really nice.

I am a new player and I have yet to paint my Cygnar yet. I want to do something other than the classic scheme. I was thinking making the main color that white found on Thunderhead and accenting with gold/blue.

Yes, why not? I think Cygnar looks better with more bright tones than their overall blue scheme. So try it out to prove my opinion's right!

I agree with you! The arc nodes' glow was actually the first serious attempt to do some OSL. The glow is this strong on the original modell (like it looks on the photo) and lacks a bit of soft transitions - like the light on the shield has - or could spread a little further.
But with the little time I have for painting, I am considering every modell done as a work study for the next one. So, for the time being I'll stick with the Lancers bright arc node, I think...!

    Thanks for Your advice, though!

    None taken...!

"The colours go round and round and round! Please, MAKE THEM STOPP!!!"

That's actually what they are intended to look like! Painting the arcs I wanted them to look like unit/character markings being in motion, just as the ones which are used in real-time strategy games (RTS) . Looks like it worked...!

And for those, who'd like to know: The rune on Strykers right is a "C", the one on his left an "S".

I am happy you guys like the work.

    Thanks!

    Red face

    Thanks, guys...!

    Charger

Man, I really hated painting this guy. So many details on such a default Jack. The OSL-effect of his eyes doesn't suit me also, for it looks like some kind of chronical conjunctivitis.
And after I finished painting I realized some golden glitter had been splattered onto the blue arcs assumingly done during brushing the model with gold paint. Really annoying!

By the way. Lacking any special abilities I don't know why this guy has a hammer instead of a claw. All the hammer does is keeping the charger from claw-based power-attacks. A little bit unnessacary, ain't it?

Anyway I like the walking/approach pose of this guy, which is definately better than the old one....!

O.k.! So, yesterday I took the opportunity to work a little bit on the Charger. Changed some scratches and got rid of the unsatisfying OSL-effect. I am really liking the result and think I will use these scratches on the Ironclad as well.

The glow around the Chargers first versions eyes looked like a serious eye disease. It simply didn't work on the real model. Therefore I decided to get rid of the illuminated areas around the eyes and stick to the glow inside them. With the now distinct and/or dark areas around the eyes they themselves get more pronounced and therefore glow stronger.

Well, being not a native speaker I will try my best to describe what there is to do.

Yet I think OSL is something which you can read a lot of but in the end have to practise until it at one point makes "click" and you get what you wanted to express. After reading some articles I got quite some advices on doing the arcnode and after that it made a lot of things easier on the following light sources. In this case it also helps that I am painting the miniatures in a less realistic and more "comicy" way (as I've been told) so that it doesn't matter if the effect looks a little bit more striking or sharp then it would look doing a more realistic approach.

First it is always important to keep your colours very thin but not running. Second, you should bring yourself to mind where the source of the lighting effect is and the illuminated areas are. Here the areas which are more exposed to the lighting are very important.
Got a nice picture from Sauklaue while working on the arcnode,

    and Thk-Design

which helped me a lot figuring it out.

The light is usually the brightest at the source and fades to weaker the farer the illuminated area is away from the source. Areas which can't be "seen" by or from the source are (naturally) not illuminated, therefore no colour.

Edges or pronounced areas which stand out of the illuminated areas are brighter than their surrounding areas, because they break the light coming from the source (the technical term is called "brightness gradient" I think).
A good example for this is the edge of Strykers Breastplate or the illuminated button on his armor. Notice here the edges are not pronounced only by painting them brighter than the surrounding areas but also keeping some darker tone at the base of the edge.

I prepare the light source with painting only the source Skull White before applying the OS . With this base the source will appear brighter than the surrounding areas.

Use a lot of blending to make the effect natural and try it out until you are really satisfied by the result. I personately think that blue is a good starting colour for practising it, because it is easy to apply and you don't have to mix different colours to get the effect you wanted. In my examples I started with a Mix with drops of Regal Blue and more Enchanted Blue and went to a bright mix of Enchanted Blue and Skull White.

Green or Red Glowing I felt to be a little bit trickier to get a satisfying effect, which may be because they need more different colours than blue does. With these colours I only have a little bit experience and will try it out later with the Wold Guardian after having finished this small Cygnar project...

That's just a short runthrough doing OSL. Like I said, it is something you can read a lot of. But in the end it will just work if you try it out until it works. From that point on, it is quite fun to do.

Keeping your awesome work on the Retribution in mind this comment pleases me quite much...!

    Anyway, here comes

Seasoned fighters in Strykers Task Force also call it "the Golden Boy". I know, the bleached golden ironpads distract a little bit from the earthy colour tones. I myself am not so satisfied with it, but felt bound to stick to the estblished pattern.

I also know that the Ironclads hammer is a Quake Hammer not a Lightning Hammer - but finishing the model I simply felt there was something missing. And as some of us might know in reality a lightning strike next to you can also bring you down. Therefore no violation of the fluff - in some way...!

I've gone through the thread and couldn't find it, but..

What colours did you use for the (looks like Wood Grain, or Leather) look of the armour?
In particular, the charger model, has a grainy finish. That's not a bad thing at all and looks really good.

    This one is easy:

Start with Graveyard Earth which covers every part, even the gaps.
Cover this with Hammerfall Khaki - except the gaps.
Then wash the armor completely with Devlan Mud (this wash seems to be the ultimate solution for everything).
After that I highlight the riveting bolts on the armor again with a mixture of Hammerfall Khaki and Bleached Bone.

    Aaand, that's it...!

The more DM you put on, the darker / more brown it gets. I personately don't liquefy the DM, resulting in a more gritty look on the model, which usually works perfect on warjacks (except Retribution, perhaps)...!

    Well, here is my

I have to admit that I was a little bit overwhelmed by the possible sources for OSL, and after having finished it I am not really satisfied. I could have done more OSL on the leader, but this would simple have eaten up all the basic pattern, which I didn't want to happen.

I am still somewhat thinking I should have skipped doing OSL on this one keeping the basic colors. The lightning tendrils on the generator look nice, though - so at least I dont have to be afraid of painting flashes anymore.

The final miniature will be: The GMCA-substitute Valeria Alvaro...! >Pchiuu-Pchiuuuuh!...!<

Say "Hello" to Valeria Alvaro and "Goodbye" to Cygnar,

Senhorina Alvaro is in my opinion one of the best sculpted miniatures of all of the Ik-Series. It's pose is both calm and narrative. And it is made in one piece. I really like her. I didn't buy her until the moment I decided to get a WM-Battlegroup for Demogames, but after I made this decision I knew I had to include her. Thus she takes over the job of a GMCA - simply because I had no idea which other position she could take up in such a small sized Army.

The base and her red scarf are braking the general pattern of my BG a little bit, but as she is a solo this really doesn't worry me at all...

Tja, and that's pretty much it for Cygnar!

I am glad I could try out some Battledamage and OSL and hope to intigrate it into my work on my Circle-Faction.

There is nothing much to say but a hearty "Thank you!" for the motivating and constructive comments...!
