Iron Fang Pikemen - Charging Another Model in the Unit and Defensive Formation

I just want somebody to check my head on this, since it seems like the DF errata still confuses me.

Say I have a full unit of Iron Fang Pikemen with UA. I activate them, and give the charge order. I use "Defensive Formation". I run the standard bearer and the officer out 10". I then charge the standard bearer with several models in the unit, and charge the rest to the officer. They all end their movement within 2" of their charge targets, thus successfully charging.

I then take my combat action with the first model, who kills the standard bearer. The other group kills the officer. I now promote a model to be the Leader of the unit. Now all models can move 6" and all models are affected by Shield Wall.

Is this correct? Because it seems a tad odd but perfectly legal.

As far as I can tell based on reading the post and the errata id say it would work. Plus you only need ONE pikeman to complete an action for ALL to get shield wall and the ones who had an action get to move.

One note: you won't get to promote a Leader, as you already have one. That Leader model now becomes the unit commander.

Nope, only models that made an action get the move, but everybody gets Shield Wall. See the link in the first post for that.

There is actually a way to get all 10 models around the standard bearer and in LoS and in 2inches but its extremely tricky and leaves all your guys in one small area before their 6inch move. Killing the officer would let you spread out a bit more.

I don't have a book anywhere near to look it up and I've never had a reason to try it, but when you charge do you HAVE to make the attack? I recall that for a charge to succeed, all you have to do is end with the target in melee range, after that your first melee attack is boosted. I don't recall it saying you MUST make that attack.

PG 47 3rd paragraph. "A charging model that ends its charge movement with its charge target in its melee range has made a successful charg. It must use its action to make a combat action, choosing to make either initial melee attacks or (if it can make a special attack with a melee weapon) a melee special attack."

So, yes you MUST make that attack.
