Update time! Only a small one. I got distracted by this mini while putting it together since I needed to paint parts of it before it was fully assembled, and I just kept painting until it was done.

You have done really awesome bases for these. Its one of the nicest snow effects I have seen. If ever I get around to doing my Khador I might just copy it.
The lens on the end of the spyglass looks great, and I love the uniform choice.
Your shading looks amazing. What is your technique? P3 colors thinned with mixing medium? Is that sanguine base shading the red parts?
Really fantastic work. Your eyes on the figs and the whites on the Jacks are extreeeeeeemly good.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!
Thorn_678: I'm actually using GW paints right now as I had a lot of old ones laying around and my FLGS doesn't stock P3 yet. On a lot of the models before the Mortar Crew I was using a fair amount of matte medium and water to make transparent glazes, but after doing the MC with mostly just water to thin I'm liking the results a bit better. Still experimenting, but the matte medium seems to be harder to get a smooth, even coat.
The reds on the previous models were base Chaos Black, glazed up with Red Gore the finally with Blood Red (sorry I don't know the P3 equivalents). I recently just picked up Mechrite Red which is a much warmer base tone and may experiment with it (the Morter Crew used it instead of Red Gore).

Working on some objective markers for the Gnarls League (we started late and are only on week 2, so hopefully I can finish them up in time). I wanted something that a) fit in with the theme of my army and b) could be used for a variety of scenarios. Harder than I thought for Khador. I considered some sort of frozen Orgoth ruins but eventually decided on a small coal mine shaft as one, and a pile of mining supplies as the second. Still trying to come up with ideas for the 3rd.
Anyways, here's a WIP:
I figure Warjacks need coal, so it's useful, and I wanted it to fit with at least one SR2012 scenario objective, and I could easily see a coal mine working for the Fuel Depot scenario.
The test mining cart in the background turned out too wide for the mine so it'll grace the "supplies" objective and I'll make a smaller one for the mine entrance.

Small update. Building up the sides of the mine hill and got the track affixed. Adding some siding and metal bumpers to the cart and assembling some wheels and a track for it.

Thanks, Dok, high praise coming from you.
Mining cart is pretty much done besides payload. Waaaaaay to big to fit in that tiny mine shaft. (Don't say it...)
Cart is probably the right scale and the mine is too small, but there's only so much you can do on a 50mm base and maybe geological constraints means the mine has to be small then they transfer payloads to a larger rail system. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Construction complete and painting has begun. I "copped out" on the 3rd marker as my imagination was running dry and I knew time was short for me on these, so I just built a little Hirst Arts monument. If the red marble paint job comes out, it may end up being my favorite one, haha.

Little bit of a learning curve on the veins, so the top ones don't look great bit overall I'm pleased. Next up, some foliage and snow.

And done...
Had to cut yet another notch in my Battlefoam to fit that damn monument in there.

Thanks pacman! It's actually a really old trick used to paint gems and jewels. Since a rounded, translucent gem tends to let light pass through to the bottom of the surface before reflecting out, it tends to be darker on the top and lighter on the bottom contrary to standard shading. So if you blend to a really light color on the bottom, and a really dark color on the top (using crescent shapes to accentuate the curve of the surface), then add a tiny white dot (representing your glossy gem surface reflecting the sun or whatever light source) in the top in the darkest portion, it gives the illusion of a translucent gem-like surface.
I tend to paint mine as if the light source is a little to the left of top just because it's a quick and dirty way of getting a nice looking effect. I've seen others put a spot bit gloss varnish on afterwards. I haven't done that with these but will probably give it a shot since I have some laying around now.

Loving the markers soooo much! great inspiring stuff sir!![]()
very very good stuff my friend. Keep up the good work.

The reds really make the colour placement stand out more than if it were the main colour![]()

Khador = 16/30 +0/1 Warcasters
This was on the table when I found out I could actually go to KingdomCon, so I hurried to get it done before I went. Right down to the wire.
This is my first attempt at two brush blending.
I'll try to get a better pic after the con.

Your beast09 is amazing. I especially like the base. How did you make the ice?
Amazing work I love the mortar team.
Beast looks really nice. I am impressed with the white.
Wow I love that Beast 09
Skorne Army eBay auction ending 4/21/2012 @ 8:00pm Eastern Time http://bit.ly/HVcwJ1
Beast-09 won Gold in Large Sci-Fi (they split Hordes/Warmachine into the Fantasy/Sci-Fi sides of the competition), and 2nd runner up to Best in Show (aka 3rd overall in the competition) this weekend at Kingdom Con! There were a lot of *really* great models there and I'm extremely happy to be placed among them. Most of the other winners were far cleaner and employed a much subtler brush work that bespoke of much greater mastery than me, so I can only imagine the blatant flashiness of my paint job caught the eye of the judges, haha.
Anyways, here's some different pictures, although I'm not sure if they're any better, hehe.
Thank you, everyone, for your kind comments and encouragement! And as always, if you have any constructive criticism or suggestions for improvement, I'm always open to hearing them.

congrats on the win!
Thanks gabbadj!
Finally working on my first warcaster. I've really been looking forward to painting this model for a while. I think it's a really great sculpt with lots of detail. WIP:

I just started painting my Harkevich as well. It is a awesome sculpt, but my only complaint is he needs more pockets on his chest /sarcasm.
Question: With your mortar team how did you get the cast-iron metal effect on the mortar itself? I'd love to replicate that when I go to paint mine, rather than it just looking black.

gabbadj: lol, and the widowmakers don't? Rob Liefeld's got nothing on these guys when it comes to pouches.
Darguth: Sad to say, I didn't do anything. I went back and forth in my head trying to think how to get the cast iron effect, and in the end, I just painted it Chaos Black and left it. I think it only works because of the juxtaposition against all the other shaded elements and the fact that it's such a simple shape. But yeah, just plain old black. No highlighting at all.

I just use Elmer's, Woodland Scenics snow flock and a tiny bit of water to increase the flow (but it's still a very thick paste when I'm done mixing. Hard to scrape off the toothpick onto the model). I had one of my early experiments turn out pock marked. I think it was when I added too much water to the mix. When the water evaporated as the glue dried it left gaps between the flocking.
Overall my snow still looks a little icy, rather than fluffy and powdery, but I'm ok with that.
