Longest Night Event

Soooo... the latest newsletter just went out, and it has an event announcement in it:

The Longest Night is an extra day added to the Iron Kingdoms calendar every three years at the end of the year, therefore taking place both after the old year and before the new one. It exists as an adjustment to bring the calendar widely used in western Immoren back into alignment with the seasonal year. Like any special occurrence, this is used as an excuse across the region for a wild festival including drinking, music, dancing, fireworks, and people dressing up like the dead.

While noted mostly for its wild revelries, the Longest Night also has an ominous supernatural reputation, as unusual events have been known to happen. Much of this is likely coincidental, but recent Longest Nights have certainly brought dark surprises, including the dead rising in Corvis in 602¬?603 AR. This year marks yet another Longest Night, and with war raging across the Iron Kingdoms there is no telling what things may go bump in the night.

Celebrate the Longest Night and the release of the epic version of one of the most iconic characters in the Iron Kingdoms, Alexia, Mistress of the Witchfire, with the Longest Night Event. This event features a special edition medal for the event winner, a chilling Longest Night scenario "The Witchfire Ascendant," and special edition participation patches commemorating this historic event.

Clicking the link takes you to the PP Events site, but I'm not seeing any information there, and there's nothing very helpful in the newsletter blurb either (the date, any idea at all about the format (tournament, open gaming, etc), etc), sooooo... howzabout filling us in, O Great and Powerful Red And Gold Names?

Also: VERY excited about the return to medals over coins. The coins looked fine, but they were difficult for me to display in any meaningful way. I like the ready-made "mounting bracket" on a medal.

Also: that particular medallion design is absolutely spectacular. I've found the coins to be a bit garish with their bright colours, but the simple silver-and-black on that medal, with the only colour being the simple green on the ribbon, is nicely understated and classy. Now I just need to know what the format is so I can figure out how to swindle my way into one of these things.

It's a casual-play event scenario, so you never know.

I've always liked the Longest Night as a thing, even from first playing through the Witchfire years and years ago. This event definitely has my interest.

I was just about to muster the willpower to cut down on junk in my diet...and now everyone at my FLGS, including me, has an incentive to bring candy. Le sigh.

On an unrelated note, I understand this is a casual event, and it doesn't really matter, but does anyone else think that 2 4"x4" buildings are a bit spartan as a terrain setup? Granted, the zombies effectively terrain as well, but it seems a little too open.

Admittedly, I'd be tempted to add some terrain around on the outskirts of the board -- a couple of buildings, some hedgerows and such, to add some visual interest, at least.

Can you proxy in the IK Alexia for this tournament? It is a PP model that represents the exact same character and does not present confusion of looking like a legal model.

Always up to your EO. Most are probably fine with her as the regular on foot Alexia. Few will mistake her.

I am psyched for this! I can't wait to give it a whirl myself. Need to plan my own event and find one I can crash looking for the medal. I also need to pick up some Thralls for Ms Ciannor since I will be fielding her just for the extra point. Not to mention, sweet model! OH! I know! pSkarre list! Sure, pSkarre doesn't benefit her but at least then I tend to bring along some living models for her to gather off of.

We play tested with terrain and decided against it because the temptation was too great to place it in front of the exit zones, which was something we did. The scenario is pretty darned entertaining without it.

We playtested a 35pt version with 2 thralls per turn over the weekend (1 per side, randomize tent). It worked exceptionally well. The thralls made a proper mess of all planning and the game came down to casters and a handful of models on both sides. A proper blood bath of a festival.

And no one crashes a beach party like Vlad!

Let's just say that it's a good time when you're down to Kreoss 2, an Exemplar Senechal and two very angry Knights Exemplar from two different units. Yeah, it was a little tough trying to stem the tide of thralls *and* DC's Cryx. Calling our game a "blood bath" would be an understatement.

I think this would be really fun. My only problem being that it would require buying a model I would never be able to use again, as of the 3 factions I play none can use her normally...

I still make the statement that pVlad is broken, considering that I had you down to pVlad, 1 manhunter and your greylords and still had roughly half of my army and still wasn't able to kill vlad.

though I do agree that the random 2 thralls worked at 35, now we just need to remember that they only come out on turns 1-4.

Best way to kill him is to knock him down first. Throw a model at him. Slam one your own models into him. Do whatever you need to knock him down and then he becomes quite killable.
