Default Starting and FULL walkthrough for Khador

Ok well i picked up the 2 player box and sold off the Menoth stuff and im going to go through stge by stage of painting and playing with the khador portion

    To start - Building
Fairly straight forward... glue it all together how you think looks good.

Sorcha - no real poseability, but she looks good and doesn't need any

Her Destroyer - Again with a gunjack with no real options for the gun make him very Static, BUT he is a good guard for his lady

HERE we get some nide stuff! Her juggernaut - In more of a headlong charge/slam with his open fist - i figured it was allot more dynamic than any nonEXTREME pose ive seen for him.

And then the Shocktroopers - i wanted them exactly what they are - just a wall of armor - so all shields forward, weapons down (except for the more inspiring leader) just kind of a "come at me bro" pose.

Looking good, I myself decided to keep both parts of the two player box and will start Menoth sometime next year but will start collecting more Khador shortly. I will keep an eye on this thread and see how you proceed it will be good for tips.

The pose on the Juggy is indeed nice looking. Are you going with the studio colors, a variation thereof, or something completely different?

not 100% decided yet but definitly NOT the studio... im thinking pink.

When i picked them up i also picked up a can of white primer, red ink, and the khador paint set. so that allong with what i have is what will probably start the paint scheme... but im thinking Pink with black edging... may change my mind tho if i cant get pink to look right (will make a few test models)

Also on the juggy's pose - it was somewhat annoying to get like that because of the 'slider' bits inside his shoulder, i hd to use a hot knife to melt them away (couldn't find my dremmel) AND cut off some of the rivets

You have some mould lines showing that could use a fileing/scraping down.

yea i know, theres allot of them... my knife wasnt sharp i got to find a sharp exacto-knife tomorrow to do the job. The main ones i need to do are the Man-o-war foot bars. they are raised a bit over the base, so those need to be shaved down.

I have to agree 100% on this, and those mold lines always seem to stick out like a sore thumb, being the oddity that your eyes are drawn to.

Keep up the good work! Pink should be an interesting color choice. Plarzoid is doing some Khador in pink, he's got a thread a bit farther down. I believe he's using Murderous Magenta and Carnal Pink for his.

I make dice bags and paint/play with toy soldiers.

ok so far ive done a couple test patches on other models, and om somehwat happy with. i think im going to go with a more pale pastel pink than the neon pink everyone else is painting.
Still have to decide on how im going to prime them tho. Not sure if it is going to be black so so it hides the recesses, white so it is easier to paint the pink, or black with an over dust of white (this is what im more leaning towards). on this strain anyone remember which NQ was the issue where they showed how to do this with the wraith engine? i cant seem to find the article.
Unfortunately pics of anything (and thus work) is on hold for a week as a family member borrowed my camera, so i cant take pictures of the step process.

also sitting here at 2am drinking coffee when i have to be up in 7hrs got my mind thinking...

I think i have some ideas for the basing (something missing form my other armies at the moment) and looking for some input on it...

Im Thinking of going with Cracked blue iceflow for the basing - simple, east to execute with some additions tho. I sort of want to add some anime/comic styled energy waves coming up from the bases. for some of them it would be very easy, for Sorcha it would be a rising set of spikes circeling her and coming up just behind the back of the frostfang, for the juggernaught it would be more of an explosion type thing coming out behind his line of movement ... but thats where the idea ends... Not sure of what to do for the destroyer or for the MoW... Anyone got any ideas??

Here's some pics of paper mockups (bad quality due to no real camera, just 3ds)

hard to see the one for the Juggernaut but i think it gives the idea..

Also annoyingly if you notice the jugg is missing its axe arm?? YEA... it fell about a foot off my table to the floor and it broke right across the upper arm pistons... so thats annoying and needs to be corrected... im thinking of just cutting and drilling them out and replacing them with pins...

ok after another run of scraping mold lines i just went outside and did the first primer coat of white on the 2 jacks and sorcha (and a bonehorde for blindwater, see my other army threads in my sig)

and i think ive settled on a paint scheme, unfortunately not the want i want which would be this, but it would cost more than it is worth to get a hold of the Val Florescent Magenta... BUT then i did see this and the pinks look great with just p3 paints (ones i already own). So i think im gonna go with Plarzoid's process for the pink, but with a different accent color. i don't really want to go with the gold edging. There are definitely going to be some yellow metal on them, but im thinking more of a darker brown brass.
As for other colors im not sure yet. i was originally thinking black but it seems everyone and their sister painting pink pairs it with black. gonna research some other things and see if anything else seems to look good.

ok decided to start blocking out some colors on sorcha today, unfortunatly i noticed im all out of magenta so i couldnt do anything with those areas... and i decided to go with a multi tone pink effect for her atleast, with the magenta pink being for armor and a pastel bublegum pink for cloth areas.
the pink color on her is a mix of carnal pink and red ink
jackbone for the fur edging on it
scorched brown applied to all the areas i want to be brass since i find it goes on easiest over it than on anything else even against black.
mix of beastialbrown and jack bone for the haft wrapping and her hat
kardic flesh for her face, and thighs (yes she is going to be showing some skin down there)
for the magenta areas they will be her main shoulderpads, forarms guards, leggings and boots and her corset.

all of the above will of course get various highlights and shadings afterwards... but thats it for now on her till i get magenta.

(again low quality pics due to not having usual camera, will get more shots of her before doing any other stages other than color blocking)

yes the MoW are plastic. which is a blessing and a curse... ALL of their halbreds, sorcha's weapon, and the jacks axes were ALL bent to some amount... Sorcha's was the worst beig a complete S - it was terrible.. but after a few seconds under the hairdryer and a min holding it straight as it cooled it was fine.

Quick tip incase you have any future plastics that are super deformed. Use the hair dryer, and have some cold water near at hand. Hold the piece the way you want it after they dryer and then hold it under the running cold water. Instantly rehardens the plastic.

Great little blog BTW. Fun to follow.

I actually did that with mine (lied in the above post) and actually wish i hadn't now...doing that weakens the plastic (which is probably why my Juggernaut arm broke) it hardens the plastic but makes it more brittle.
In the future i will be more patient and let it cool slower.

actually i couldnt... im apparent out of magenta paint so i cant paint those areas at all. Also as i said my camera was out of town (it came home tonight) so i wouldn't have been able to take pictures between layers like i want to anyways.

Ok yesterday at gaming I picked up a pot of murderous magenta, and played 2 20pt games against 2 different troll players

first game was against pDommy with mulg, a mauler and an axer - LOTS of power, i was scared... especially since turn 1 he put fortune on the axer and banishing ward on the mauler.. But with some good maneuvering and use of a forest i was able to feat, to freeze all 3 beasts, and use boundless charge to launch a 3 focus laden juggernaught into the mauller to mulch him, same turn the shocktroops and destroyer fired upon and wiped the axer. Mulg then proceed to utterly pulp the Juggernaut of course, Doomy was there alone... and scared... We played it out and for fun i just charged him with sorcha, critted on the charge, then continued buying attacks untill he failed his tough.

Second game was against pMaddy with an axer, impaler, pyre, a unit of runeshapers and a min unit of kriells with banner and musician. a New player but i didnt take it easy on him... School of Hard Knocks arround here, and he didnt want any leeway. so after a cautious turn of advancing and firing the destroyer at some kriells and doing nothing do them passing tough and surefoot keeping the standing. Unfortunatly he advanced just a bit to close on his second turn and was spread out in a bit of a line... so Sorcha walked out infront of her army, Feated catching EVERYTHING except for a single runeshaper... then windrushed back behind the army to safety. After that jugernaught walked up and killed nothing due to tough (he is SOOO lucky!) but not enough as the destroyer and shocktroops unleashed lead and destroyed half the kriells and 1 of the runeshapers. He was in a bad position... Maddy and all 3 beasts shook stationary, axer rushed himself and charged into the shocktroopers doing a while 2 points of damage to a single one of them since they were in shield wall... then the pyre troll charges in and does nothing to the shocktroops... then the impaler throws his spear and boosts against a shocktrooper, misses, and squeres the pyretroll in the back! Maddy then throws his axe, boosts and hits the pyretroll AGAIN!! BAD bad times... that was basically it... Next turn Jug walked away from one of the kriells taking a freestrike with no damage and pulped the pyre, the shocktroops tried but with some bad rolls didnt kill the axer. Destroyer killed more kriells and another runeshaper, while sorcha shot the last kriell warrior to death. His turn he Rushes then charges Maddy into a shock trooper and kills it easilly, but with nothing else in his melee range and no fury. the last runeshaper fails a charge against my destroyer because he cant move into the right position, and kriells charge and do nothing to the jug. My turn i decide to end it. Sorcha has line and range so charges maddy. Boost to hit charge attack and...miss... FFFUUUUUUUUU... buy an attack, boost to hit, CRIT and a decent ammount of damage. buy 3 more attacks, final one would have finnished him off, but he remembers and uses his talisman to negate the attack. Shocktroopers shuffle over and make the final attack and kills him. Fails tough. This is a new player that will ALWAYS remember to use his talisman on criticals that make him auto hit in combat. he will never forget that lesson.

BUT back to the main point of this thread... here is sorcha with magenta on her, and some other colors touched up a bit

And here she is with the metalics added, a highlight on the magenta, and some highlight on the brown areas

Ok and next i mised up a wasark shading and lining for me, it was about 50/50 scorched brown and armorwash, with a good chunk og water till it seemed right. painted this into where there were crevices, hard lined areas, over rivets, and onto the brown and bone areas along with flesh and hair.

First layer of highlights over the wash - at this point after a couple layers of highlights on the face i REALLY didnt like how it was turning out, so i painted it over white again... i think im just going to simplify it with just a wash of kardic flesh over the white.

ANOTHER update today!! i seem to paint quickly but somewhat sloppy compared to allot of others around here...
So this time i got another layer of highlight on the armor, this time it was straight carnal pink (all previous layers having atleast some magenta in them). havent decided if this is the last layer yet or not or if i want to put morrow white ontop...
Also did another layer of pink on the cloth to even it out since it seemed a bit splotchy. Also did the kardic wash on her face which still doesnt look good... i suck at painting flesh faces...

this time 2 layers of pink on the cloth - the cloth pink is actually morrow white and khador red base - with progressivly less red mixed in
also added some contrast to frostfang with some silver sections
and finally painted the khador symbols on her shoulder with red-orange-yellow

    Dat Rump... :F

I also dont think my usual white background is working anymore with a model this white... im gonna see if i can find something darker....

    And now for something different!!!

    Bases!!
Decided to go with a Cracked ice pattern for them since i already had the plasticard out to do the "energy blasts" and the blue should compliment against the pink.
Also decided on how to do the energy for the destroyer - 2 smaller blasts on each side to sort of represent energy forcing out back behind his feet while standing and firing the bombard... a bit of a stretch but i think it works well enough.

    just balancing on their bases

These photos were taken inside of my Battlefoam bag so i tried a close pic of sorcha with the blackbackground... and it doesnt look right... still too much reflection

soooooo close to completion on her....

all that is left is to figure out something for her face, do a bit of a wash on the silver, apply the final highlights to the gold, and highlight the bleached bone areas.

As for the base it was simple - sprayed white, washed the entire thing with 50/50 blue ink and morrow white, while still damp took straight morrow white and sort of blended it at the edged, when dry apply more morrow white, after all the white was dry apply straight blue ink to the cracks again and at the base of the energy trail and sort of spike it up into it.

minor touchups - finally got the face looking close to decent, i such at eyes so those are going to be a dark haze area... (the sculpt also seems to be lacking detail there) fixed her hat a bit, painted the symbol on the hat, touched up the symbols on her shoulders slightly, highlighted the bleached bone areas, and i wasnt happy with her hair, it was sloppy and the bone didnt stand out there, so i painted it grey and added a single layer of highlight to it.
Also touched up the white on her base slightly

Also tried taking pics on a brown background (as others had been) still dont care for it... may need to make a "real" lightbox later on...

Also as a Special prize... Sorcha petting her EPIC mount!!!

Oh and after taking these pics this afternoon i took her out and used some GW Purity seal on her - she is drying now - afterwards i will highlight the metals again.

ALSO i blocked in the magenta areas of the destroyer, and will be working on blocking in the jug aswell later. Unfortunately they will both be on a slight hold as im running out of white paint and i want to premix some of the mid tone pinks so they both come out equal.

Ok no work today but i ended uo doing more than i thought i would yesterday.... Here's some pics of the destroyer to start - I did things differently on here than with sorcha and differnetly on the jugg too...

For the destroyer i started with the white base ofcourse, then blocked in the magenta, then blocked in metal with scorched brown, then the metals ontop of the brown, then added the armor wash and scorched brown over the entire model (i think this part of it was a mistake) to add shading and darken any areas i cant easily reach to paint. After that i went over the magenta a few times with more to cover the brown streaks, then did a couple layers of the pink with a mix of morrowwhite+khador red base (same mix as sorcha's cloth). It all seems a bit dark due to going over more a brown base than white, but it should all lighten up with the highlights of color like sorcha did.

For the jug i did it a bit differently... I started witht he metalics right over the white instead, doing 2 layers, then i did the brown+armorwash over the metalic areas and darker areas, leaving most of the armor plating areas unwashed. After that i once again did a couple layers of magenta and a few of the pink.

as you can see a good chunk done, but still a LONG way to go. (highlighting the magenta alone on both would take almost twice aslong on each jack took sofar)

Ok if anyone is even still following this thread... I did a good chunk of painting and did some more on these 2 jacks, dont have many in progress shots as before, but it isnt that hard to see what was done.

first layer of highlight on the magenta

Second layer on the magenta on the Jug, and 3rd later on the destroyer started

Here you can see the 3rd layer of highlight on his fist and how i stylized it so it was purposly more comic/cartooney

and here is the magenta "finished" on both and the first highlight on the ... other pink pink areas - it was done with straight Carnal pink over my mixed basecoat, it looks really harsh in the pictures i think, but looks better in person, and a highlight of morrow white after should soften it slightly

and as you can see ive started going through to do some black lining in the crevices and more block off some of the different areas with some black ink

and here you can see the difference between a nearly complete, and a not close to complete back and how i an probably going to do all the tabbards

Ok did some more work, finished all the highlights, and as you can see i did end up going back to add a mid tone to the pale pink, did a buttload more inking to add shadows and edging to various areas and some red->yellow detailing on the fist insignias, and around the tabards, and on some of the facial areas. And i started on the bases. They arent coming out how i first did Sorcia's for some reason, but with some tweeking they should be fine.

And for some reason the macro focus didnt want to adjust as it should have so some pics are a bit blurry, i'll get more pics tomorrow after i finnish some detailing and get a clear coat on them (which should dull all the ink areas to a matte black.

    Awesome work.

If you mount a set of guns on pinky pie on a CD for your gun carriage ...

    Keep up the great work

Ok everyone It is finally done for the foreseeable future... The battle box components are done, i don't plan on purchasing additional models for quite some time for this army, BUT i can already field a 30 point army with:

    Sorscha
    Juggernaut
    Destroyer
    5 Shocktroopers
    Ogryn Bokur
    Godrun the Wandrer
    Madelyn Corbeau
    Gorman

could be a VERY brutal list actually...
Sorscha is protected behind a wall of shock troopers, moves out, feats, wind rushes back out of the way
Sorscha feats and Godrun just EATS infantry
Bokur is Godrun's buddy and adds some fun slamming options to the list
Jacks make friends with enemy... Well their corpses at least...

So here's some of the final pics...

So as you can see i did soem more work on the bases and fixed them, definitely looking fine now, then i sprayed them with GW Purity seal and it dulled them out, removed ALL the shine from the ink i added around the rivets, and it looks MUCH better. Just one final thing to do id black the inside of the barrel of the destroyer but apparently i have NO black paint... (how can i operate without BLACK??? [apparently VERY well])
