Something that I've found that works very well for basing is cork. You can buy squares of it at office supply stores, then rip it up and use the bits for basing. When painted you can pretty much make it look like whatever you want (stone, ice, etc) without a ton of work. I don't think I have any pics on this computer, but I might have some I could post if you want to see what I mean.

I like using actual rocks for bases when doing stone. You still have to paint and shade the rock, otherwise it looks like a model is standing on top of a pebble and not a similar sized boulder.

If you want to create your own basing features, try Sculpty or large chunks of Green Stuff. I'll usually mound little bits of green stuff so the terrain doesn't look flat when I'm finished.

Try local hobby shops and look for various types of flock, ballast, and other bottled terrain.

Some essentials are white tacky glue (add a little water before applying), small stones, and static grass.

Have you seen the line of bases by Micro Arts Studio (MAS)?

They have some forest, swamp, and other themed bases ( around 20 different ones or more)that might be interesting to you.

Check out Thewarstore.com. They have pics of most of them...

I wouldn't recommend freebasing (hope I am not dating myself too much) it makes painting hard...
