Default Air Brush Compressor - Should it be smoking?!?

For christmas I received two awesome gifts: and Paasch beginner air brush and the D500SR Air Compressor. I'm excited to learn how to use these to base color minis.

Now this thing has an auto shut off when it gets too hot. I've been using it for about 15 minutes and it shuts down to cool off. I look up and see a faint line of smoke rising from the back! I freak out and unplug the thing from the wall, and I notice what looks like a glowing filament inside of the compressor where I think the smoke is coming from. It's now sitting across from me on my desk, starring at me ominously, ready to explode any second.

At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot.... is this a "holy crap that's bad!" moment, and I need to return it ASAP? Or is this somewhat OK, like when you use an electric stove or a new frying pan or toaster or something for the first time, and it smokes a little and smells a little bit bad, but it's a normal part of getting broken in?

I would say return it. There is no reason for it to have a hot filament so I'd guess something is wrong.

As an electrical troubleshooter, I can tell you that it is normal for electrical motors to generate heat but what you describe does not sound normal. Without inspecting the device there is no way for anyone to precisely diagnose the problem, if any. Don't take the chance since it is brand new. Return it.

Thanks guys, I plan on returning it first thing tomorrow.

Edit: I tried turning it back on after an hour, fire extinguisher near by, and it just buzzes, like the whole motor is burned out.

I did get the browns done on my Storm Strider base first so.... woohoo!

You let all the magic smoke out of the electrical parts. Return it and they will put more in it.

    Zack --

It's only OK for it to smoke if it's 18 or older. Did you check its ID?

Unless the "compressor" for your airbrush is a dude blowing into a tube and by "smoking" you mean cigarettes, then no, it shouldn't be smoking.

SMoking electrical components are bad. They work better with the smoke inside.

I guess we need to recall all those big trucks I see because there's always smoke coming out of the exhaust.
