Thread: Purple Ret

  1. #1

    Default Purple Ret

    Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forums and Retribution, though I've been playing Warmachine for about a year now. We just wrapped up a Journeyman league at my LGS and I wanted to take the 122 pts of table-ready minis I painted and make them a bit more polished. I'm using this thread to motivate me to stay on task, but also to get some suggestions for improvement.

    C&C highly encouraged.

Here are my first two minis. Kaelyssa of the pink hair.

The brightest purple highlights were washed out when I took the picture. Any idea how to fix that?

Love this scheme with a passion! Can't wait to see in on some Dawnguard. Bravo.

Here is my Griffon. I tried to do some metallic shading on the shield and halberd, but I'm not sure if it looks quite as clean as I'd like.

Did some more work this weekend. Starting up, the last of my jacks: the magna myrmadon (Hydra and Manticore).

    Hydra:

    Manticore: (Good 'ol Wolvie)

Here is the warjack broken down into its various parts. I know he has a big seam on the back, but as soon as my freehand gets a bit more refined I'm planning on doing some tattoo-styled work up there. I wanted the vertical seam for a landmark.

Your stuff looks awesome, what colour did you use to get that burgundy?

I love the rich tone and dramatic highlights.

The Manticore Wolverine claw idea is wicked cool! If I make another, that's what I'm doing.

OP can correct me, but the burgundy looks like P3 Sanguine Highlight to Skorne Red.

@Defenstrator: The burgundy/purple was actually a huge pain in the neck. It was ridiculously complicated to get, but I love the effect. Here goes.

Prime black (white makes the color more lavendery).
Base with GW Foundation Hormagunt Purple
Give everything a heavy was with GW Leviathan purple
The darkest purple was Reaper Purple Liner. A little goes a long way.
The mid-tone color is P3 Beaten Purple.

To get the highlights, use a 2:1 mix of P3's carnal pink and murderous magenta. Then, do several thin washes of murderous magenta over the pink.

The blending was a mix of layering a wet-blending.

Once I got the technique down, things went pretty quickly . . . relatively.

    Hope this helps.

I have to admit, as a preliminary white traditional colour scheme painter for Ret, this does look pretty damn cool, but something about them not being white will always irk me lol, I do love the transitioning in the colours!

Hey Faolan, it was great to see these minis in person today at the Dojo. If anything, they look even better in real life! (I was the other Ret player getting trounced by my little brother's Cygnar at the next table.)

Howdy FC. I'm glad you liked them. I still feel like the images are coming out more red than purple, but I'm not sure how to fix it until I get a light box.

On the table for finishing work is a mage hunter assassin and Nayl. After that, Ravyn. Now that I got stomped by Ravyn, I think I get how to run her.

Oh, to be as good a player as I am a painter. Then I could give people a run for their money.

Your models are gorgeous, Faolan. I really like your scheme. Along with myself and FC, it's cool to see some totally sweet alternate scheme Retribution hanging around the Dojo.

As far as being as good a player as you are a painter? Just like painting, it's practice practice practice.

    Holy... freak!

LOVE this Ret Scheme. If I were to start ret, I'd definitely spring for this scheme. Thank you for showing this off AND doing such an awesome job!

Thanks for all the compliments and well-wishes, folks. Here are are few more. I've been working on solos to balance out all the time spent on jacks.

Again, any comments and criticism are welcome. I'd love to start entering my work into painting competitions, but I'm not sure what to focus on improving.

    First up, Mage Hunter Assassin.

I'm not totally happy with the blending on her skirt, but the highlighting follows the shape pretty closely.

Let me know what you think.

Great job on your army so far! That take on the purple, to have the darkest areas almost black works very well! Your army definitely looks intimidating!
And also, I think the free-handed tattoo work on the soulless is coming out just fine! I want to see the freehand work on the Discordia now. Keep up the great work!

Thanks, Zee. I'm glad everything is working out here. Sometimes I look at the minis and wonder.

Freehand on the jacks will come once I get a bit better at it. Repainting the flesh when I mess up a tattoo is quite a bit easier than trying to fix up the jacks. I figure once I get a few more tattoos done, I'll use the same style of tattoo on the jacks.

I had to take a little break due to real life (moving, puppy, work, etc.). Thankfully I've had some time to paint again. Here are the results.

    First up, Ravyn.

Here is my magister. I'm not sure why the darkest areas aren't as crisp on "film." I might have had something set wrong when I was taking the photos here. Still, the glow looks pretty good.

The glasses on the stormfalls and Nayl's sword are probably my favorites.
