Default How to put Pictures in your Posts

I'm a big fan of the "NO PICs NO CLICKs" movement

    http://privateerpressforums.com/show...-didn-t-happen!

So I figure it's only fair that I talk about how to post pictures in your forum posts ...

How to put pictures in your posts

This little tute will cover two things
    1. how to put a picture in your post
    2. how to upload a picture to your privateer press forums account

How to put a picture in your post:

    You will need:
The URL of your picture (see section 2 below if your picture is only on your home computer and not uploaded to the internet - eg flikr or photobucket account)

To find the URL of your picture you can ususally just ask your web-browser for it.

In Firefox and Chromium if you right click on the picture there is ususally a menu like this

I think Chromium's says Copy Image URL.

I'm not sure about internet explorer, but I believe you can "View image" and then copy the address out of the address bar

    ....
How to get the URL from a Flickr account is here
    ....

Now that you have the image URL, when you are typing your post, there is a menu of icons at the top of the input section - like this

The arrow is pointing at the "Insert Image" icon.
Click this, and paste in your URL

You should see your image URL surrounded by the IMG and \IMG tags (buletin board tags are surrounded by square brackets [])

You can look to check that your image is posting correctly by using the "Go advanced" button and clicking on Preview post.

    ....

More to follow in just a minute

    2. How to upload an Image to your privateer press Privateer Press forums account

This is what to do if your picture is on your home computer and you want to get it to postable on the forums

Your Priavteer Press Forums account allows you to store a large number of up to 800 x 600 pixel images for posting.

At the top of your screen you'll see this bar

Though yours will probably not say "Autumn Stone" unless you have stolen my password

    Click on your name

A little bit down (under your avatar and your friends list) you'll see your albums

    Click on "More"

You'll see all your albums if you have some. More than likely if you're reading this you won't have any. The arrow point to create new album if you want to make a new album, otherwise click on the album you want to put the picture into. Up to 20 pics per album

If you clicked "Create New Album" you'll see

Give it a title, and most importantly, leave it with the public button pressed

You now have a new album to put your pic in. Once it's open, we'll talk about how to upload a picture to it

    ....
Still more in just a minute

Now that the album you want to inset the pic in is open, it's time to upload that picture to it.

You'll see a bar like this at the top right.

    click the upload pictures

Next you'll see something like this

When you click the "Add Files" button, you'll get the "upload files from your computer dialogue". Click browse and find your picture. click OK and the the "Upload" button you can see in the picture.

This gets it to the PP forums website, but not into your album yet

The page you see is divided into two sections. The top one shows you thumbnails of all the pics you've uploaded lately. The bottom one shows you the ones you've just uploaded with a tick in the corner.

Once you have uploaded all the pics you plan to upload this session, click the "Done" button in the bottom left corner

    You'll see something like this

Click the "Save Changes" and your picture is now part of your album.

    ALMOST THERE!!!

Now just click on the thumbnail of your picture in the album, and you'll see something like this

In the bottom right corner you'll see the picture URL and the BB code

You can copy the Picture URL and follow the instructions in section 1 above.

Easier still, you can copy the BB code, and when you want to put your picture into your post, just paste that directly into the text you're typing. No Fus No Muss.

I know that sounds like a LOT of steps, but I have literally gone click by click through it and it's really really easy.

    Have fun posting some pics.

    Cheers
    A.S.

    Late edit
If you use Flickr, instructions - thanks prismatik - not sure who added these to my post - a helpfull mod I guess
*Click above the image on the Flickr page called "ACTIONS" and go to "VIEW ALL SIZES"
*Pick a decent size and rightclick on it. Choose "COPY IMAGE LOCATION"
*Come to forums and when you post, hit the little tree in a box symbol, it permits you to post picture urls. Paste the url in the open field it gives you and blammo, you're good.
Alt version that I wrote some time before just further down
    posting from Flickr

Get the pic you want the URL of up on your screen.
Click the magnifier with a plus in the middle.
Click the "View all sizes" button at the top of the screen.
Change to the size of the image you want (list is above the pic)
Copy the URL from the image on the page that comes up.

Just a little note about inserting images that you might want to add to your FAQ...
    Hey AutumnStone,

This is just a little weird random something I've noticed about uploading images. You might want to add it to your FAQ, or not, either way is fine.

    I use the "as displayed" text editor, not the BBCode text editor. When I follow the steps in your FAQ exactly, I have about a 50% success rate with uploading pictures. The one thing I've found that boosts this success rate to 100% is to do the following;

    1. Type some gibberish text
    2. Highlight that text
    3. Use the "Insert Image" button and add the image over the text.

I have no idea why this works, but it does.
Later edit: how to get your URL from a Dropbox picture:
open your Dropbox picture set. I used list view, but on further experimentation, it seems that either view will work.

Right click and open link in a new tab (that's the critical bit. Just clicking takes you to a pop up that you can't use). It will take you to a page displaying this picture.

Right click the picture and copy it's URL. It will have a format like this
    htps://photos-4.dropbox.com/t/0/AAB-0nhO1hm6mbekr0e2N3zTWRT860cpFuZcBWaOCUK94g/12/149884759/jpeg/1024x768/2/1362351600/0/2/DSC01268.JPG/IwytZPG6KjGEu-9MV_JPSjPpc6a9mqzuM6kDu1Ddb8M
Note the big long heap of gobbledygo*k at the end, and the lack of semicolons and colons in the link. I have also changed https to htps in the above link so this forum doesn't truncate the link. Sample link by Gobos who prompted this addition. Some very pretty circle stuff.

Thank you for the info. I didn't realize you could create photo albums here. I've created about 3 different flickr/ photobucket accounts for the rare occasion I've wanted to put up a picture (only becuase I totally forget the login info for each one after I've made it). Knowing this makes it much easier. Now I just have to snap some pictures.

    Thanks guys.
(I guess now the No Pics No Clicks Movement have a link of our own so we don't have to feel bad when we ask people to post a pic)

@tdago, I doubt we can have a sticky for this - as I understand, I think each forum has a limited number of stickies it can have, and Minis and painting is full. (I think I read this on a "words of Doug Seacat" thread that couldn't be stickied for this reason).

I've asked plarzoid to put in in the index of his stickied tutorial thread, so we can at least reference it.

If you wish to post the most important pic from the tute when you ask someone to "No Pics No Clicks"

the BB code that you can just copy / paste in is
    {IMG}http://privateerpressforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8070&d=1328385718{/IMG}

but replace the {} with []

    Four pics per post.

That also includes smilies and inserted warmachine/hordes symbols.

You sometimes have to be careful with smilies as colon P or colon bracket sometimes gets spontaneously converted.

Cheers and thanks for posting pics

P.S. if you want to post more than four pics of your stuff, just reply to your own post. There is about a one minute lockout before you can post again

Your privateer press forum account allows you to host a number of pics with them, so you won't need a picture host like flickr or imgur. The pictures uploaded into this picture store are limited to 800x600.

For other picture hosts you can upload pictures of larger sizes depending on their local rules.

For posting pics in these threads, you are allowed to post pictures of much larger sizes.

So if your Picasa account allows 1000x1000 pixel pics, you should be able to post that larger pic here with the same click of a button or [IMG] BB codes that are listed above.

To be honest, I've found 800x600 to be more than enough, and the time it takes and bandwidth it takes to upload the 5000x3000 pictures some people post I find a little bit poor form. There are lots of tools to scale and crop your images, and it makes for nicer pics with better framing anyway.

One final note, there are some guarded sites that won't allow linking of their hosted pics into other sites like our PP forums. One such (I believe) is Facebook. Ie you can't post pics from your Facebook account in these threads - you'll need a separate pic host.

Cheers and thanks for posting pics
    A.S.

P.S I haven't double checked this, but I think that with the latest update of their forum software, that the pictures -whatever the size are framed to fit in the width of the page - not slide left and right. To view an enormous pic at full scale, you'll need to zoom into it. Firefox browser allows this by hitting "Ctrl +". iPads/pods allow this with pinch and zoom. I'd have to double check how safari, chrome and ie do it, but I'm sure they have similar ways.

Great info! I didn't know I could host photos off my PP account...

Though, it may be helpful to have a post about how to host photos elsewhere due to the file size restriction for the PP hosting.

I personally use facebook or myspace (why else have a myspace account these days?).

@oconnor. I know. See many many many of the posts above. Hope you found the threads useful.

    ...

Some people have been asking how to get hold of the URL of a picture from a Flickr account.

Get the pic you want the URL of up on your screen.
Click the magnifier with a plus in the middle.
Click the "View all sizes" button at the top of the screen.
Change to the size of the image you want (list is above the pic)
Copy the URL from the image on the page that comes up.

New question arose - how to post from Dropbox?
It's been added in to post #3 above.
If I'd have known how I'd need to update this thread, I would have reserved myself more space.

I hope I'm in the right place here. Tried to find an answer with the forum search, but came up empty.

I have no problem uploading images to an album or linking them from my photobucket account. But I can't see a good deal of images other users have linked from their forum albums.

"Show Images" is activated in the forum settings (as is "Enhanced Attachment Uploading", though I doubt that's important in this case). I've tried to see the images on different computers and in Firefox as well as in Chrome. No luck.

If I switch directly to the users album, I can see the thumbnail, but clicking on it only leads to a page just showing a small, blank square where the image should be.

Curiously enough, I tried with this album (http://privateerpressforums.com/album.php?albumid=1532) and while the first pic doesn't show, the other three do. The corresponding forum post does suggest that others can see the first pic, though. The pics in the other albums show, too.

In this album, none of the images show: http://privateerpressforums.com/album.php?albumid=1681

Does anyone have an idea what the issue might be? I really enjoy seeing the beautiful models of others and it's a bit frustrating reading the praise without being able to see the images.

    You're welcome Meninte Messenger.

    Thanks for the tip GabbaDJ.

There are many free picture hosts out there on the net, and each has it's own idiosyncracies. As much as I love this community, I'm not going to volunteer to seek out each and every one of these sites and make a how to of their peculiar quirks to make them work. I know Flickr's quirks have been howto'd. Dropbox has a guest author's how to. Photobucket I understand works out of the gate, but does have some issues with bandwidth. Facebook tends to fail as it won't let others access your pics all the time. If anyone wants to post a how to for their favourite picture host, I'll copy-paste it up close to the top of the thread.

    Thanks all
    Cheers

So currently, your picture is on your computer's H drive. You need to have it hosted somewhere on the wider internet - like say in your privateer press albums.

Re-read posts #2 and #3 of this thread. They will help you get your pic uploaded to your PP forums album. You should then be able to post them with the img tags.

If you're really struggling, try uploading them to a Flickr account, and then following the steps listed in the how to flickr section in post #3 of this thread - though this is a bit trickier

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

Posting Pics using a FREE Wordpress Account

    - Register for a free account on https://wordpress.com
    - (Optional) Obtain a photo editor such as Adobe Photoshop or the FREE Gimp to lower the resolution of your pics

    1. (Optional) I would lower all the pics you want to post to 72dpi resolution which is web friendly and takes less space than pics straight off your camera. Also you can change the width to try and keep it at 600-1024 (Be sure to constrain proportion when you re-size your image so it doesn't become warped). I usually keep my photo at 800pixels width max. The reason why I do this is you save a TON of space over time. I have several hundred photos on my site and I still haven't used even 3% of my total space yet.

    2. So now that you created your Wordpress account, you will see your dashboard and will want to select the MEDIA tab then ADD NEW. Select or Drag and Drop whatever you want to upload.

    3. Now simply select the image and now you should see "File URL" to the far right. This is the internet url to your image.

    4. When posting in the forums simply copy and paste your image link (File URL) after selecting the "Insert Image" button at the top and be sure to uncheck "Retrieve remote file and reference locally". Done!

Hope this helps some people out there

    BIG BIG THANKS GabbaDJ!

I wasn't able to copy in the whole post as I've already blown my pic limit on the posts at the top, so I've directed and linked to your post.

    Thanks again!

    Cheers
    A.S.
