    Default Khador 5th Border Legion

OK, since the forums reset I can't go back and edit old posts, so I'll just start a new thread to get up to speed.

First up, some models you've seen before:

    Butcher:

And a couple of shots of Butcher's Battle Group:

A Devastator, very useful with Butcher, very damaging to enemy infantry and, more importantly, an amazing looking model. This one has its arms repositioned outwards at the elbow, uses the legs and head spikes off a Spriggan and has the 5th Border Legion badge sculpted onto its carapace.
And it was painted in one piece, because painting my white Dev in pieces nearly sent me demented:

Your models are beautifully painted. Good job!

Can you describe the paints and techniques you used on the War Dog? I tried to get a nice brown/tan coat like that but had little success.

Dang dude, I'm in the process of doing up some 5th Border Legion for my own Khador army, and this is very motivating (I've been slacking..lol). Beautiful models man. I really dig the battlegroup shot and everything overall is just superb quality! Can't wait to see more of the army!

And a Spriggan, possibly my favourite jack in MKii:

I'll be adding a second one of these in due course, and not just because they are good, but also because that damned lance gets in the way of everything and the next one will be holding it aloft to be more game-freindly!

Look closely, both the Dev and Sprig have the 5th Border Legion insignia on their carapaces.

The basing is also very well executed.

Finally, some proper updates, the whole reason for posting everything else.

Progress has been slow, not really been able to spend time on this army for a while now, but it's been a rather productive few weeks.
Well, painting wise at any rate. The snow has kept me quiet in other respects so I've been able to get on with these.

First up, Yuri The Axe, lover of animals:

Next up, min unit of Kayazy Assasins and Underboss:

I really like these models, hence their getting painted. The fact that they are decent in game terms is a bonus really, I'd have done them anyway.
The detail on them is very sharp, but not overwhelming, combined with the proportions being very spot on they were enjoyable to paint.

And finally for today, a min unit of Battle meachanics:

These are also nice models, and pretty damned useful when you field alot of jacks.

Only problem is that there are soooooo many cool solo's that cost the same points.

Anyway, that's it for now, there will be more soon; Greylod Ternion and Koldun Lord are ready for paint, as is Alten Ashley, a converted Bokur and the male Manhunter to complete that set.
After which I want to do Zerkova and finish converting some Doom Reavers to get them painted.

But in all honesty, I reckon Saxon Orrick will be the next update you see.

Thanks for looking and sorry about some of the pics.

    Thank you.

I think the colours used were Foundry Tan for the most part, and Foundry Boneyard on the feet to make them paler.
The belly and face were darkened with inks, and the colour along his spine was made more red with chestnut inks.

I'll try and remember to get some shots from different angles next time, as they aren't the best.

It does take a while and a fair bit of messing around, so I'm glad when people notice.

Truth is there is probably more sweat and swearing goes into the bases than the painting

They're a bit too bright and crisp for my personal tastes (i.e. for my own models), but I think they are fantastically executed, both technically and creatively.

    Well done!

    It shows.

Often basing is an afterthought and takes on an "I guess I should dump some flock on here" appearance (something I am sometimes guilty of as well),but these show some definite forethought and planning, AND are well executed. Very "real" looking.

It's Foundry Moss, A, B & C, with brown inks for shade and lining, over a deep brown base.

Love the minis. I am starting a small "battle box" size Butcher force which I was planning on doing in the 5th colors as well. I was curious how you went about putting the 5th badge on all your minis. Did you use a GS mold off the Kodiak or did you just hand do it?

Half and half Nog; I took a press mould from the Kodiak and used that, but due to different size and shape carapaces it requires a fair bit of sculpting around the edges and to get a shape that the insignia can sit on without looking odd.

I thought it'd be easy, and then it wasn't really.

Worth it though, the rest of my jacks will have the same, so will wreck markers.

Wow, very nice paint job. I like it. I really enjoy that Spriggan (also my fav warjack in MK 2).

What did you do for the snow basing? Simple snow flock? Currently for mine I'm having to layer on glue and snow 2 or 3 times, but yours looks like 1 nice, even coat.

That Spriggan is awesome. I'm rebuilding one I got from a friend.

You just answered how I'm going to do the lance on mine.

The color scheme is fantastic, the painting is superb. But let's not forget the A+ base work on these, either.

    Excellent work all round.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

For the snow, that's pretty much what I do as well.
First layer I add some white paint to the glue for a bit more depth of colour.
When that's dry I paint brown ink around the edges to add to the melted look.
Then 2 more layers of diluted pva glue and flock.

I gloss varnish all my models by hand, before I base them, then give them a wash of very dilute matte varnish, which covers the base as well and helps smooth the snow out.
The matte wash is to make sure all the deep areas and undercuts are matte before I give them a spray with Army Painter matte to seal everything and get a consistent finish.

Which technique did you use for the color transitions on the green armor plates?

    Thank you.

Just using Foundry Moss, A, B & C, which is shade, colour and hilight, it's what I would call blended, but as I only use one brush others would disagree.
Mind you, many would probably call it juicing or something like that.

So I dunno. To many terms floating around.

Three colours, from darkest to lightest, in very dilute layers, over a dark brown base, then with brown shading done with paints and inks to darken the deepest areas.

Awesome color scheme, beautifully executed. The skin tones are spot on for this paint job. Your blending with the colors is outstading. I'm only wishing I could do it that well. Really, Thumbs HIGH up!

I'm a big fan of earthy/muted/subtle color schemes so I love your army a lot! I envy the way you paint faces and eyes, awesome! Your Spriggan is the best I've seen! Kudos! Thanks for sharing!
