    Default Bethayne and Belphagor Forever

When I first heard that PP were making a warlock and warbeast that could combine and separate again during game, and came with magnets and the pieces to make the model actually represent this, I was sold, and knew I would have to get this model eventually (so it is nice that I do play Legion). It's been a while, but I finally got them last night and immediately set to work.

Despite the brilliance of the idea I wasn't 100% sold on the poses though, so modification was always intended. My main plan was to elongate the tail on Belph so Beth's feet wouldn't touch the ground when melded - I felt this would make the model more dynamic. Also, Beth needed her arms posed differently and more ornamentation. This is still early WIP days, but these pics show what I've got so far.

The new head for Belph obviously needs a lot more work, and he needs his own arms, but I like the pose of the melded arms and legs.

I would also invite anyone else who has a magnetised duo like this to post pictures here, especially if converted, as I feel we do not have enough pictures of this pair around here.

Not a huge amount of action in this thread so far, but that's alright. Here's an update with how the pair are looking on my painting desk.

Hurrah, Bethayne is done! Her friend is still in progress though.

I don't usually use green on my Legion models, but Beth has an affinity for Corrosion, and to me Corrosion is green. So I added some subtle touches to her claws which I think works nicely.

I also finished my first two Legionnaires, which is my first Legion infantry unit so far. They don't look that spectacular since their scheme is pretty much identical to the studio scheme, but I like them.

Love Bethayne, the green is great, not to overpowering, just enough to add some pop to the model, great job!

Belphagor merged usually looks like a forced piggy back ride, but this one it looks like she's actually struggling to get free with the way the arms and legs are posed.

Really like Bethayne's paintjob; the green edge of her face wrap is particularly eye-catching!

Thank you. I am struggling a bit with Belph because I am not happy with his head. As the pictures show, I tried to sculpt a new head at first, but it didn't work so well due to my lack of skill at sculpting fine detail, so I took it off again. But I still can't quite accept the way his head looks so comically shrunk into his shoulders, like he is a turtle that won't come out of his shell. I love the art, but it just doesn't work on the model in my view.

So my latest attempt to rectify this is to make the model ineligible for PP painting contests by giving him a tyranid gaunt head. Once I have added some green stuff I will take some new pics.

I also replaced the metal plates that went with the magnet with more magnets, so to create a stronger bond by having magnets on both sides. This worked great, and his chest no longer falls off at the slightest touch. This will be my advice to anyone who gets this model and intends to use the magnet trick - get extra magnets from the start and save yourself the headache from trying to work with just the single magnet you get in the kit.

Here is the result of the new head so far. I think I like it, but we will see what it looks like painted.

I also got myself a little something extra today, because I was happy about finishing Bethayne.

... similar to my thoughts: to me it looks like a snake-monster has half-eaten Bethayne and she is floundering to get free... I am not sold.

But the paint-job so far looks really nice.

I plan on buying her soon too, if I manage to get a "better" solution, I will show it here.

Try using a grey background. The white is washing out your model.

Good point really. I didn't see it that way because in my mind, I tried to make it look like an action pose, like the way a martial artist might have her legs posed while leaping dramatically into the air. But seen from a different angle, I can also see how it might look like "aaaahhh, get me out of here!".

I guess I could try and bend back the right leg too so that it's not stretched out so much, and both legs would be bent back, but then it would lose the (admittedly ambiguous) dynamism. Difficult choice.

... I think it really depends from angle of view (when looking at the model from the left side it is not so obvious), and it is the leg positions together that cause this impression to me.

Maybe you can get some "ready to launch out"-pose by bending the straightened leg too - as you suggest.
Then you maybe get that winded up spring-impression you probably tried to achieve

I'll give it a shot! I've just been working some more on Belphagor and he is almost done.

One issue I have with Kallus is that he is a fire-themed warlock, as evident from Ignite and that his sword has a fireburst. I'd like to reflect that in the painting, but since I'm going with the traditional icy snow theme, I really don't want to use warm fiery colours on him. Is it reasonable to say that blighted fire is purple? Cause then I could add some purple lighting effects to the sword maybe.

It's weird how Legion stuff can mix the different effects. Is the throne's attacks meant to be fiery? My only problem with making the fire blue is that blue is already the colour of damage type: cold in my view. And electricity as well I guess! Ideally I'd like each damage type to have its own colour, which is why I was thinking of purple since that isn't already taken I think...

... I'd take purple if I were you, as it fit the blue theme and doesn't mess with the coldness of ice (although fire and ice both cause burns on skin, even with similar feeling).

I guess the way it makes most sense in my head is blue=electricity, grey=cold, green=corrosion and red=fire, with blight-fire=purple as the weird one. Since I like having blue and purple on all the models, I can paint Kallus' robes blue and it will work out.

Thanks Plarzoid! I will turn to Kallus in a moment, but for now, Belphagor is done at last, concluding the initial theme of the thread. Here he is.

Because I also touched up Beth a little bit (ooh er), here is a final shot of the dynamic duo.

... much better in fused version now, no more struggling for freedom

Now it looks a little more like they are about to leap forward for a devastating strike with all claws.

    Thanks, I'm glad!

To my satisfaction, thanks to all his armour, Kallus was very easy to paint, and here he is, along with his Legionnaire cohort. So far I've decided against adding any flame effects, because I think the sword looks too cool as is, but I may go back and try it at some point.

Next model in line is a Forsaken, and then I plan to either buy a Blackfrost Shard, or try and sculpt some Incubi for Kallus' feat. I prefer having real Incubi to random tokens, but I'm way too cheap to buy the official ones just to represent a free effect, and they should be simple enough to make if I just stick to making them monstrous worm-embryo things.

What colours do you use for the beasts skin like I've seen in one of your posts. Like the custom Raek and Carni. They look awesome as do these.
