Starting a Cryx Army
Im thinking of starting a Cryx army, ive only ever played Legion and enjoy playing them and after some time looking and reading all the warmachine books it took me some time to decide on a faction to play. But Cryx stood out the most and ive been going over the book time and time again to come uyp with something.
Im getting the starter box to begin with and i love pistol wraiths, machine wraiths, corrupter, seether, slayer and the deathjack. As for casters it comes down to Goreshade the Bastard, either version of Gaspy or Venethrax.
Any ideas/suggestion on satrting up would be great
i know everyone says start with the starter pack but really i dont think thats always the best way forward. my advice is pick 2 warcasters which benefit from similar army builds and go from there. there is a sort of core you will likely be including in alot of if not most of your lists which for me includes the following
bane thralls + UA + tartarus - they are too good not to seriously consider using in every list. the wreck face simple as some prefer bane knights for reach but the UA makes them stand out.
mechthralls - cheap cheap cheap and surprisingly hard hitting.
warwitch sirens - 2pts of pure awesome. two of these in every list from 15 to 50pts for me
skarlock thrall - cryx is focus hungry faction and anything that eases that is awesome, not great for every caster but certainly most and for a few auto include.
arc nodes - for me its either the nightwretch or defiler. eventually id look at 2 of each for varieties sake, i only use ones with ranged ability because a node doesnt work in melee. depending on caster u will want at least 1 preferably 2 and in some cases up to 4 for larger games.
deathjack - not for every list because hes pricey and a big target but it cant be denied hes one of if not the best jack in the game, very focus efficient, almost unstoppable when he starts killing/healing
withershadow combine - not for everyone but i love this unit, takes some getting used to but paired up with a reaper or malice and they can reel jacks in and wreck them so easy. they can usually get out a free seether if you work with a plan during a battle. against hordes id likely not bother though as their main ability only works on jacks.
reaper/malice - this is becoming my go to jack. open up charge lanes, drag in jacks to wreck, pull casters out in the open and pretty cheap too.
all these things synergise well with all or most casters. anything else is just preferance really so my advice is pick a pair of casters, read everything u can about them on here and start small and get advice for each stage of expansion.
Well, I somewhat agree wither the starterbox comment. If you have no love for Little Denny, and you SHOULD BTW, then your better off buying a blister of arcnodes. I still think the starter is worth it because you can always convert your slayer into something else.
PGore was one of my first Casters. He is a boon and a bust for new players. He's easy to use, but costs you a fortune as you will need 2 units of thralls to use him properly...dats allotta $$$$
Machine wraiths are neat, but they are not super effective. Id wait on buying them.
Pistol wraiths can be fun. Most folks tend to use em in pairs and with pDenny or Skarre.
For Jacks, DJ, Seether and Harrower are my go-tos. I don't bother with Corrupter. I'm a huge fan of stalkers and they are pGore's little ninjas. Helldivers are also neat. You DO NOT need many heavies...opposite of Legion. You will need 2 arcnodes.
If I was starting over, I would do this...
Starterbox + tokens + deck
Bane Thralls + UA + Tartersauce
Stalkers (x2 if you can)
Warwitch Siren (2 if you can)
Skarlock (almost an auto-include with some casters)
McThralls + Necrosurgeon + Brute Thralls
Casters of Choice (I like pGaspy, Skarre, Morty)
After that, you can start looking into expensive ****e, like DJ. If you have the Card Deck, proxy stuff. Seriously, TRY BEFORE YA BUY. You'll save yourself a fortune.

definitly agree with try before you buy. cryx more than most rely on synergy to work well, theres a lot of stuff thats great with some casters and dud with others and what might seem like a great combo on paper you find doesnt work in game. the other thing to look at very carefully is focus. you need some kind of way to manage your focus be it a skarlock, warwitches or self sufficient jacks like seether/DJ. anything that eases the focus load on your caster is vital. a lot of our casters are focus hungry with great spell lists you will want to be taking advantage of but you cant do it if your pumping 3-5 focus into jacks just to get them to run let alone boost/buy attacks.
