    Default Is this "fair" ?

This is the story, my FLGS is having a battle box tournament and we are debating using "make your own battle box" rules. They are the one's PP released that are if i recall, no more than 11 points, no character jacks, and no repeats. the argument against this is that people are going to try to come up with "unfair" lists that break the game at 11 points. The only army i have is pirates, and i don't own Bart, nor do i really want to own bart because i don't like his play style and i would probably never use him again. So, i wanted to do a Shae battle box, which in my mind would be...

    Shae
    -freebooter
    -buccaneer
    -mariner

this is the same list as PP puts out except with a different caster. To me, this doesn't seem particularly overpowered and Bart is a jack caster, while shae is typically considered an infantry support caster, but I wanted to get the internet's thoughts in case my inexperience is making me miss something.

    Thanks for any inputs.

The players who want to break the event need to go back to $40k... There is a fine line between competitive and being an obnoxious fart nozzle.

As far as your list, go get 'em!! Shae's movement shenanigans can really throw someone's game off. Especially when they thought they were safe, and suddenly there is a Freebooter punching them in the face sack from halfway across the table!!

Also, the whole no repeat jacks isn't quite true. The dwarf battle box came with three gunners. It also weighs in at only 8 points, not that that is a disadvantage But truthfully, how much can you break at 11 points?

That was my opinion, but i have had someone that really REALLY thought shae was broken with this battle box. To me is jut makes sense and i think it is actually better as the Tallion charter list, but im a true Phinneus Shae fan so maybe its just me.

agreed. Yeah, Shae is good with them, he loves the freebooter and Buccaneer, but he does nothing for the mariner, and even loading it is risky because he has low enough armor to have to worry about boosted AOE effects. And its not like Bart is terrible with those jacks, with batten down the hatches, pirate jacks lose their biggest failing, low armor, and with broadside, you can probably keep most of your opponents jacks knocked down with the buccaneer and then there is of course the mariner double firing every turn with Hot shot. ah well, some people see unfair advantages everywhere.

Re-read your post here. Are you being told you cannot use Shae? Are there Caster/lock restrictions on other factions for other players?

nah, thats me, my location is SOON to be halifax, i do go to battlegrounds. yeah, i wanted to see if people considered this fair, or if people thought this would be OP. The complaint on Shae was from a person at a different store concerning a journey man league where someone thought this was way overpowered to use in a JM league. I am hoping to start a dialogue/debate on this for this event and see if the organizers would be open to the idea of make-your-own-battleboxes. Sorry for any confusion, and thanks for the comments.

Battlegrounds has a rep for being a VERY competitive scene, even in casual games.

I have no first hand experience with that store though - no car, and a long walk there.

there are two though, i am at the Plainville one, and that really depends on who you are playing, you can get very friendly games, and very competitive games if you are looking for them, also, Warmachine isn't huge there, so this is more for a bunch of people who are getting into the hobby, or have only recently gotten into the hobby.
