Flocking Slotted Bases

Just wondering what everyone does to fill/cover the slot in the base before putting flocking on. So far I've just cut little strips of paper, glued them over the slot, and painted black before flocking, but there's a part of me that thinks there must be an easier and/or better way.

That's the method I use, if I need to cover an empty slot - usually using the insert from a blister for raw material.

I use a small piece of masking tape. Don't worry about getting it exact - just close. Then, I use an xacto knife to cut the extra tape off. Once you primer it and cover it in sand or whatever, you won't see it.

I usually cut a small strip of the clear plastic from blister packs. I then super glue that plastic strip to the base, wait for it to dry, then flock the base.

I have been using the liquid green stuff from gw... The stuff is fantastic, and very easy to use. It dries fairly quickly.

But if I am in a rush, I will put a small drop of excellerent into the slot, and drop a few drops of super glue in there. Bonus to this method - your minis WILL NEVER come out of the base!!

I use masking tape if there is enough space on the base. Otherwise, if the slot opening is small, I'll just use greenstuff.

Piece of sticky tape over the slot. Its dirt easy and you cant see it once you paint/flock.
I make a slit in the tape so I can get the thingy models are attached to through and the tape makes sure there arent any gaps, but many people simply cut that off and glue the model to the base.

I have seen people fill the slot with hot glue, white glue mixed with sand/basing, tape, paper, plastic, Green Stuff, modeling clay and Chuck Norris beard hair.

It makes sense that tape would loose it's stickyibilityness. So far none of the ones I have done have come up or loose. Though I do put 3 or 4 layers of sealant on all my models before a dull coat.

Guess I'll just keep doing what I'm doing, though for some reason I never thought to do it before priming. That should make things a little easier, and then I don't have slots showing til I get around to doing a batch of basing.

Define "evenutally"? I've been doing this since Warmachine started and only had it happen once. (Really, I've been playing that long -I actually bought a Butcher fig before the game was out from an online store - didn't get a card or a base...)

I use Grey stuff, shove it up in the slot from underneath the base. smooth if off with a sculpting tool.

I'm part of the masking tape crowd. I haven't had any come loose so far.

I'm always using GS when I'm putting models together, so I just use a little of that. Easy to do do too.

im crazy... I use a Toothpick. It is the right size to fit in, just cut to length using clippers , superglue into place.
I find it gives the best of allt he methods of above.
It's quick, like using tape, couple quick snipe then just superglue dry time (couple min max)
its cheap, like paper/tape, since i can get a bok of 200 toothpics from the dollarstore... and dollarstore superglue
it's durrable, like putty, toothpicks are harder than you think
it isnt "pokeable" like paper/tape. ever accidentally get a sword poke up through the slor of a taped/papers model?? not good times... nothing gets through a toothpick.

I use tape myself, the tape "may" lose integrity "eventually" but the glue, sand and flock hold it down if it does.

While true, its also true that the glue used to attach flock + the primer + several layers of paint + sealer will make sure it sticks forever.

This is just a personal preference, but I'm really not a fan of flock. I like to cover the base with pumice gel and then paint it as earth with static grass over it. There are very few types of ground cover you'd find in nature that would look anything like flock. Maybe a very fine moss? Grass is much more common and easier on the eye! Try some static grass and i think you'll see a big difference in your overall appearance. Again, just my opinion, so feel free to disregard everything I've said

I have been painting for about 10 years and have been covering the slots with clear tape. I usually am gluing stuff onto of that. I just make sure that it is pressed down(fingernail) well and trim it up. I have not had a single base come apart due to the tape.

I usually just stuff some blu tack in the gaps, flatten it with whatever, and brush a wee bit of superglue over it. Dries pretty much instantly and is cheaper/quicker than using green stuff, and easier than cutting out wee bits of paper/blister pack.

This is a good idea, I've mistakenly gotten glue on the blue tack before and had a helluva time getting it off.

I've used the following to fill the slot

• Green Stuff
• Match sticks (the type you can buy bagged in craft stores) cut to length. The ones I found are pretty much exactly the right width for the slots.
• Sprue tabs that small parts are often molded to. The retangular section ones are often the same width as the base slot. (I'm seeing suitable bits a lot less often these days though)

I use black electrical tape... then covered in white glue...sand...paint..flock and staticgrass. Never had the tape come off.

I have done it two ways.

The first I just used a bit of blister that I cut and glued over the slot. The problem with this, is it will create a lump on the base, that is very small. If you are gluing your dudes directly to the base it isn't a huge problem(I tend to pin my models to the base because I had the feat in the mud effect of basing after assembly, but I wax and wan about how picky I am about it)

Lately, I have been just using scott tape, and cutting down the edges, scoring the base then using my normal glue slurry to base on top of it.

So far I haven't had any problems I am not that concerned about the scott tape quitting on me, it's not like it isn't coated in a layer of glue.

The fastest method would be to fill it with hot glue, but hot glue doesn't actually stick to anything but human flesh.

The second fastest solution is to go to your local hardware store, and get the cheapest stick of 2 part epoxy putty. The same basic idea as Green Stuff, but about a third of the price, and... well, the best description I can give is 'crumbly'. Hardens in 20 minutes as a filler, but won't leave a smooth surface.

Wow, its suprising the amount of people who use tape. I thought most would use a type of modeling putty such as green stuff. I myself use green stuff, as I use it for my 40K and for filling those huge gaps in metal warbeasts.

wow no one mentioned my method yet. I take a piece of paper towel roll it up take my modeling tool and jam it into the slot then I use Zap a Gap, Gorilla Brand or P3 Super glue whatever I have handy. Super glue drys quite quickly to paper towel and makes an awesome filler. I have also used the paper towel pieces with Super Glue method to fill in some gaps in models. Creates a great seal as well. Oh and you always have crazy/super glue and paper towels around. :-)

This gets my vote for being fast, easy, cheap, durable, and effective.

Green stuff works, but isn't as fast or as cheap. Masking tape works, but isn't as durable.

Get creative and build a base that covers the slot completely...

This gets my vote for being the coolest and most fun option, and is what I usually do. However, it's also the most time consuming, but is a great option for the committed hobbyist.
