Default A Noobs guide to Warmachine

Howdy all, i've been playing the game for a few months and I decided, on my blog, to write up a guide to playing from the perspective of a new player. This all came about form discussions with my friends who are keen to start the hobby, I thought i'd type it up for them as talking at them seemed not to get the point across.

A lot of the material i've read has been quite "heavy", written by people who know the game inside and out. While that's awesome stuff once you know what your doing, I thought I could add a different perspective with my experiences as a new player.

I'll post the links here, but really what I am after is feedback on what went well, what went wrong and where I can take the series of posts next.

    Cheers all

    Part One - Introduction

Part two - Picking a faction

    Part Three- Your first games

Part Four - Warmachine vs Hordes

Part Five - Making a list

    Part Six - Tournaments

This article isn't part of the above series, but it contains additional useful information on this topic:

When I started a few months ago, I read every resource I could find. This is, by far, the best I've read. The army descriptions are just fantastic. Too many times, you get this vague notion of what they play like based on fluff or generalizations.

I realize we already have a sticky on this board, but I think this is much more helpful and should at least be stickied along side it. How do we request having that done?

Vom--great stuff! Really! It's definitely the best intro guide I've read, and I agree with Face Stabbity over there that the army descriptions are top notch.

Still & all, I have one thing that made me go all Tim Allen-level ARUAH?!?: First things first, 40k is the easier game to learn and to play.

Perhaps if you're a hardcore wargamer? But I went from roleplaying games/boardgames to 40k, and it was atrocious. It's not that it's hard to learn per se, but the rules are totally unintuitive. Warmachine/Hordes is just so clearly the product of a focused, clear design, while, in my experience, 40k is not. It's an old game with a lot of cruft.

Anyway: Nerd rant over, I promise! Thanks again!

Thanks all for the feedback, amazed that you think it should be a sticky on the board, really flattered

Hansel - The post you refer to is not part of this series but an old post from when i first started playing. I should probably revisit those 2 posts on 40k vs WM now that i've played WM a lot more. I guess having played my first game of 40k 23 years ago I probably do find it more intuitive

I'll do a reprise on those 2 posts later this week. It's always good to revisit what you have said.

I'm planning a few more posts in this series, the next one is on building a list to take on all commers and how much of a brain ache that can be.

Oh, duh! I started poking around your blog and ended up talking about something else. Sorry. Lotsa great stuff in there, though.

Might want to fetch a mod and get this added to the stickies (or linked within one of the stickies).

Can someone else do that? Asking to sticky my own post makes me sound like a tool

PS, Hansel. Cheers for the comments. I'm up to 80 posts on there now, i think a full half are Warmachine. The rest are all hobby related though.

I sent a sticky request. I just chose a mod at random, so I hope it gets to whoever makes such decisions. This is something that really needs to be made easily available to beginners. Regardless, I've put it in my signature to more easily refer people to the information.

You had me at "This is not Raw vs. smackdown".

probably the best faction overview for the unitiated I've seen. That's a big plus. Most overviews hit one or two of the areas you got onto, but you hit three major areas and did a good job with a minimum of words.

    Thumbs up.

Definitely a good perspective on beginning the game. I'm adding this to the stickies.

Thanks for the guide - very informative and helpful! I'm a new player (haven't even bought any models yet!) and it was useful to know this info.
However, something seems wrong with Part 3 - the page is basically "blank" - that is to say, there's other stuff on that page, but not the guide itself.
(I'm using IE9 if that matters - seems to work OK in Chrome).

I have no idea why that is, I only use Chrome and Firefox and it looks all right on those.

No big thing - I fired up Chrome to check and was able to read it just fine. I just don't like to have multiple applications that are intended to do the same thing (and I don't like how Chrome manages bookmarks). But the info is solid and helpful to rookies like me and I thank you for it!

This was very very helpful. Read all of it and even some of the how to lose stuff.

Writing is excellent as it included a bit of humor which made reading it light. The info I got from this made a newbie like me better understand this game...and hopefully I will be selecting and getting my first faction soon.

    Thanks for the comments everyone

I'm thinking about doing the next entry soon, Part 6 A noobs guide to tournaments. I've been playing for a year now and have played in three, so just enough experience to have an idea of what im talking about but not the approach a season veteran would take.

Thank you all for the comments, its most appreciated.

I've finally written the next section of the Noobs Guide to Warmachine - Tournaments

I'm also thinking of doing a faction one for Cygnar (who I play).

As always, feedback appreciated, either here or on the blog itself.

    Cheers all!

Thanks for all the work. I'm looking at getting into a miniature game and I really love the community here so far.

I really likes the breakdown of fractions and comparison between Hordes and Warmachine.

I've read little bit of your site. Not all cause I must get back to painting my Wraith Engine for battle. Few points I disagree with.

I saw one part that said choose warcaster/warlock first. Choose your hero. I would say choose your Faction first. What appeals to you. Undead? Lots of jacks (Menoth is friendly with jacks)? how the faction looks? Warbeasts? Cause you will be changing out your caster at some time. That truly does (as you stated) change the game.

Cryx is not all high risk/high reward. I don't feel that part. The rest of what you said about Cryx is true. Cryx has lot of neat tricks makes it fun.

I like your description of Circle. I keep looking at them cause I do have the army but just too busy having fun with Cryx. Never enough time to play everything! Circle can be tricksy and not always in good way. One thing out of order activation can mess up everything.

Your website is interesting and I like it overall. I like that you put in press ganger or more experienced player to learn from among other things that you put in are good.
