    Default Blue Retribution

Finally got around to taking some pictures of my angry elves. I'm not a fan of the white studio scheme so tried something a little different. I still need to work on my image post processing for the color balance (the background should be pure white), but these should give a decent idea of the paint scheme. When I get around to the mage hunters they're going to have more of a leather look to their clothing as opposed to all of the blue armor. The Myrm's shoulders are my first attempt at freehand, I'm fairly happy with how they turned out. Any critiques or suggestions would be appreciated. There are more pics on my blog linked in my sig as well for each of the Myrmidons and a few solos.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the blue looks like it's mottled. Did you do that on purpose? It gives some nice texture to all those large armor pieces. I would recommend spraying them with some matte varnish. They're awfully shiny.

The mottling is intentional. The armor is painted a light blue, then I do a few wash layers of a darker blue and then a thin black wash in the recesses. A few highlights here and there go back up to the original light blue. (If I recall correctly I think the colors used were Ice Blue washed with Enchanted Blue from the citadel line. I originally had a blue a touch darker than Ice Blue, but the paint was discontinued. Can't even remember it's name now)

As to the gloss vs flat... I'm still not sure yet. I think I like the glossy armor on the jacks - it almost makes them look more metallic, but I agree I need to get the infantry matted. Just waiting for it to warm up enough that I can spray them in the garage. Yay apartment living in a cold weather state.

I grew up in Minnesota, so I understand about the cold. Try the matte sealant on your infantry, and I think you'll be so impressed with how much easier it is to see your paint job without all that glare that you will immediately matte varnish your war jacks.

The blue looks good. However, I think these models would look much better if there were some sort of contrasting color involved somewhere. I think they need something to break up the big curving plates of armor.

The Stormfall Archers look more "normal" in this regard due to the leather bits and pieces.

    It's good work, though!

Checked out the blog, nice work. The last pic there of the cobblestone design was really intereseting.

Also, I think you talked me into trying your meat log.

    I like em
They sure beat mine, as they are all metal or light grey in colour and with 100% natural shading and highlight
A little matte varnish would be nice, Other than that i kinda like the all blue scheme.

I guess that great minds paint alike. I've been working on a Blue Retribution too... inspired by Garrus Vakarian's armor (from Mass Effect for the non-VG crowd). I really like what you did with the free hand work on the Heavy Myrmidons. And the jewling work... I am jealous of that. Any tips for jewling?

Here's what my Blue Retribution looks like...
I use greatcoat grey for my tertiary color, the primary being cygnar blue and exile blue. Reaper Blue Steel for some metals, arcane blue for the armor glyphs.

That is all the army I've done so far. I acidentally reversed my jewling colors on the Chimera... and failed to notice until after the jacks were sealed. So it will be staying 'wrong' for now.

I've also decided that minis look 10x better in person than on camera. I'm always very happy with my work until I photograph it.

    Retribution: 212/240pts 88.33% +6/7 casters | Cryx: 156/228pts 68.42% +7/7 casters
    Trollbloods: 250/252pts 99.21% +10/12 locks | Legion: 144/163pts 88.34% +5/6 locks
    Mercenaries: 169/169pts 100% +5/5 casters | Cyriss: 0/0 +0/0 casters [To be Added]
    Protectorate: 14/133 10.53% +2/3 casters | Total Collection: 945/1184pts 79.75%

Glad to see the Elves are seeing the Cygnar side of things. We welcome our pointy-eared brothers and sisters with open arms.

    Seriously though, looking really good.

You know, I usually don't like Retribution because of the anime-gundam feeling to them. However, the way you've painted their armor appeals to me, that swordsman unit in particular. The way the armor completely covers them and the somberness of your color choice makes them seem very real and imposing. You make me want to paint up some for myself. Thanks for sharing that.

Thanks for all of the comments everyone. I think my initial idea was to use leather as the contrast to all of the blue. Sadly I haven't gotten around to painting many of the models that have cloth on them. (Silly Dawngaurd) Once I get my Mage Hunter Strike Force done and Kaelyssa (my next two projects) I'll post those up and see if the contrast is better. I do have a few models where I tested my leather colors that I didn't post here initially, but here they are either way:

Finally got around to picking the brushes up again. (I really need to paint more...)
I got all of these done because I wanted a few more painted minis at the Madison 6 Pack of tourneys. Great time at those events btw.

First up, a few new warcasters:
