    Default Another New Guy...

Hello everyone My name's Mark; I've really been looking into playing Warmachine recently. Unfortunately I have never played any tabletop miniatures games like this before so I don't know much.

Since this is the New Members Area I'm sure this is just going to be another noob asking very similar questions and I apologize if this seems redundant. I'm just having a little trouble finding some specific answers in the other threads.

OK, while reading all the other questions I did figure out I needed to buy the MKII Prime book. And for getting started I think I need the 2010 Factions deck as far as cards are concerned.

    However, I didn't know:
    1. Is there some kind of starter box with the necessary pieces to start playing?
    2. Will the MKII Prime book explain the rules completely and what do the books for the seperate factions explain?
    3. Do you buy individual pieces and not sets?
    4. Do the cards explain what each unit does?

I'm sure I forgot some, but I'll be able to figure a lot out once the book I ordered gets here. Thank-you very much for your time if you read this and I appreciate any help given.

    1. There are starter boxes for all the armies except the Retribution of Scyrah. Each starter box contains a warcaster and 2-4 warjacks. You may want to check with your store to see if the boxes have been updated with the MK2 cards and rules though.

    2. Prime MKII contains all the game rules, and model rules for about 1/5th of the models in the game. The faction books will contain the rules for every model available to that faction, but isn't strictly needed because (see #4).

    3. Not entirely sure what you mean here. Warjacks are sold 1 at a time (except for Cryx light jacks, which come in 2 packs), troops usually come in a box containing the minimum sized unit, but Privateer is switching to putting the whole max sized unit in a box.

    4. The cards contain all the stats and rules for each unit, so you only really need the core rules and the cards to play (well, and the minis of course).

Welcome to the Iron Kingdoms! *gives Maardvark a cookie and a Defender plushie* ^_^

Tony pretty much covered your questions, but if you've got anything else, don't be affraid to ask. The whole "point" of this part of the forums is to ask "those same-old newbie questions" without worry about getting beat down for it. It's what we're here for, making the transition to the game as easy as possible.

    Hello again,
Is there a website that seems to be more popular than others for buying the books and cards? The store I usually go to is somewhat far from my home so I'm trying to do my initial purchasing online.

Also, is there still some MKII products being released because I'm having trouble finding faction books and cards? Thanks...

A lot of people make purchases online from TheWarstore and Dungeontrader. Both have been repeatedly shown to be reputable dealers in WM products.

And currently, you can get Prime MkII and the 2010 Faction Decks (make sure you get the 2010 decks. There are some decks out there listed as "MkII" from several years ago that were somewhat... unfortunately named at the time.). The Cygnar faction book is out this month. In the next months, the next books will come out, one per month, for each faction. Khador's next, then Menoth, then Cryx, then Mercs.

Also depends where do you live... if you happen to live in the Europe, then there is Maelstromgames.
    Average cost per game: 7,05 eur / 9,20 $

nope...thanks anyway, I live in US (New Jersey) I was looking a CCGArmory.com. It looked pretty good.

Pseudog, I saw you sig and I was wondering: do all pieces come unpainted or do some (the starter box I think looked painted?) come prepainted. I would want to avoid those because I would like to paint them myself.

No Warmachine or Hordes figs come pre-painted. Even the Starter Boxes are unassembled and unpainted.

To elaborate on some of the other answers.

    1. I am not sure if all the starter sets have the most up to date rules & cards yet so check first.

    2. Prime is complete game rules & that or a starter set would probably be the best first purchase. Some model rules are in the faction books & on the cards & you get cards for a model when you buy it.

    3. The models are sold in the quantitities that you can use them in the game. Exception:- older units come with a base sized unit set & blisters of 1-2 extra models to make up the full units, these blisters do not have (& do not need) the model cards.

    4. Yes. Subject to being 2010 mk2 cards not earlier ones. The faction decks are for people converting from Mk1 - a new player should not need them. They are a cheaper way than the books of getting all (85%) of the rules for one faction, though I would not recomend this.

"The Iron Kingdoms" is the general term used for the setting encompassing Warmachine and Hordes.

    Hello again,
I'm trying to pick a faction to stick with.
Does there seem to be a faction thats good for beginners or is it really just a personal preference?

Personal preference, really. Some people will tell you that some factions are trickier than others, but the difference between the "easiest" and "hardest" is pretty minimal.

Just find one you like the look, story, and / or play style of, and go to town.

There are some good faction descriptions written up here:

Maardvark, I apologize that I have not had a chance to welcome you to the forums. We are happy to have new player come along. Remember that the more you play the easier the rules will be to remember. I also would like to say that if you are really looking for an online store Thewarstore.com is the way to go. They are very efficient and work well with their buyers.

Thank you very much. I ordered my book from thewarstore and everything seems to be great. Unfortunately I've had recent internet trouble and haven't been very active on the forums. Hopefully I can make a final decision on what faction to play and get a little more active. Thanks again.

Don't worry about being active on the forums. A more wretched hive of scum and villany you won't see anywhere else...
