My search-fu is weak, and my local PG made a ruling a while back on AOE's that seems odd but I'm not sure if it is correct.

When placing an AOE for deviation, do the rules allow the AOE to be placed with the center of the template at the weapon's maximum range, or can it be placed with the edge at the maximum range, thus netting a few inches on the deviated AOE effect?

Thanks in advance.

You put the center at the maximum distance.

When an AoE deviates, you measure from the point of deviation to where the center of the AoE will wind up. If you deviate because you miss a model, measure from the center of the model to the new center of the AoE; this could potentially allow the center of the AoE to be beyond the weapon's range (if, for example, the target was at exactly the weapon range and you rolled a 1 for direction). If you deviate because of the target being out of range, you would measure from that point to the center of the new AoE, which again could cause the center to be beyond the weapon's range.
