Question about free strikes.

Does a free strike only happen when you move out of Melee range of an opponent?

Do you get a free strike if I move into an opponents melee range but do not target him with an attack or spell or ranged ability?

Ie: Say I move beside an enemy jack to try and assassinate enemy warcaster with my warlocks spells?

I was teaching my wife last night and told her to do this, it would be called an assassination attempt. Sadly , it failed, and my jack crushed poor Kaya. Lol

You can't perform ranged attack while in melee(both engaged and engaging). However you may perform magic attack while in melee.
