Pyg Burrrowers have "point blank":

Point Blank: During its activation, this model can make melee attacks with its ranged weapon, with a 1⁄2˝ melee range. Do not
add this modelʼs STR to damage rolls made with ranged weapons. Charge attacks made with ranged weapons are not boosted.

eMadrak has the spell "Blood Fury":
Blood Fury: Target friendly warrior model/unit gains an additional die on melee damage rolls but suffers -2 DEF.

Sooooo....if eMadrak casts Blood Fury on burrowers who opt to make use of point blank, do they get the additional damage die on their slug guns?

If a ranged weapon is used in melee attack, is the damage done by that weapon melee damage or ranged damage? To put it another way, what dictates the damage type, the weapon type or the attack type?

Yes, Blood Fury will allow Pyg Burrowers to roll an additional damage die on Point Blank attacks. They are melee attacks, and therefore involve melee attack and damage rolls.

I guess by extension, if a future spell let a model do a ranged attack with its melee weapon (the "Chuck It!" spell) the damage would be ranged since the attack was ranged.

Right. And Gunfighter lets you make ranged attacks while in melee, so the attacks are ranged.
