So quick clarification, a model that has gunfighter is engaged and higher ROF than 1, if it kills what it is engaged with until its not engaged and still has some shots left, can it shoot at up to max range? gunfighter states it only does ranged attacks in melee, so since it only does the ranged attacks regardless of being engaged, can it shoot as normal after its unengaged this way?

Gunfighter allows a model to make ranged attacks against models in it's melee range. To do this a model must selected "initial ranged attacks" for it's combat action. This allows the model to make all available ranged attacks up to ROF at any viable targets (even those out of melee range, provided the model is not engaged)

It is not enough for the model to not be engaged, it must be out of melee altogether.
But to answer OPs question, if you have several shots available and the first kills the target you're in melee with, subsequent shots can definitely be targeted at models at further range.
