View Full Version : Warcaster Units and "can cast a spell at any time"

Please look at the following thread where some very "unwarmachine" order or activations are laid out (https://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?235026-Haley3-with-Squire-s-Arcane-Realignment&p=3232684&viewfull=1#post3232684)

In that same vein, could one do the following based on the logic that spells can be cast at any time.

1. Epic Zerkova's unit Activates
2. Epic Zerkova puts Mark on doom guard number 1
3. Epic Zerkova issues run/charge order
4. Doomie Number 1 runs
5. Canbana boy 2 can do something else
6. Epic Zerkova goes ahead and Channels through Dommie number 1
7. Epic Zerkova feats
8. Epic Z. casts bonus feat spells
9. Epic Z finally CHARGES/fail charges and unit's activation ends.

I guess one question would be whether, upon issuing the run/charge order Z is precluded from doing anything prior to that. We know that casters can, of course, cast prior to undertaking a failed charge but perhaps things are different for unit leaders like Epic Zerkova?

A model that receives a charge order must charge or run. A warbeast affected by Enrage must charge or make a slam or trample power attack. A warbeast affeced by Enrage can use its animus (an "at any time" ability) before it makes its compulsory charge or slam/trample power attack (https://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?100175-Charging-and-using-animus&p=1341192&viewfull=1#post1341192).

The same applies to warcasters/warlocks that have "at any time" abilities such as spellcasting and feats (which is nothing new, considering the prevalence of non-warcaster unit commanders' so-called "mini-feats" (https://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?121008-mini-feats-and-running&p=1617915&viewfull=1#post1617915)).

The only exception here I can think of is that a warcaster/warlock cannot cast a spell or feat in the same activation during which it runs (no matter the order). By extension, if a warcaster/warlock trooper receives a charge/run order and cannot charge (for whatever reason) it must choose to run that activation and therefore cannot cast spells (https://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?230938-Haley3-Spellcasting-and-the-Charge-Run-Order&p=3180872&viewfull=1#post3180872), even before the choice to run has been made.

Orders must be given before anything else. So swap step two and three to be legal.

Thanks. But otherwise you don't see a problem? Leonard, the reason that link isn't precisely on point is that Future Haley, lacking a melee weapon, can never charge. She must always run when her unit is issued that order and thus can not cast spells in such an instance. Epic Z has a weapon. She is eligible to charge. She might fail the charge but she can try.

Yup, looks totally legit.

The other thing she can potentially do is charge a cabana boy, then have the cabanaboy charge something else. She has a successful charge, but doesn't have to swing on the doomy.

Remember you finish the entire unit's movement before you take their actions.
