I have looked online and in the rule book but can't find a clear answer, so Im hoping you can clarify :)

Can doom reavers be attacked by magical ranged or close combat weapons? and can they be attacked by magical ability attacks, eg Hex Hunters 'hex bolt'?

Weapons with the magical quality make Magical Ranged and Magical Melee attacks, not Magic Attacks.

The only things that make Magic Attacks are spells, be they from a model with a magic ability, focus, or fury.

The Hex Hunters' magic ability attack is a spell, and as such cannot target the Doom Reavers.

Magical melee or ranged attacks are not spells, and thus are not prevented by Spell Ward.

It is worth noting as a close case as well that Spell Ward merely prevents the targeting of spells. If an AOE from a spell or a template from a spell Spray lands on them, they are still affected by it as normal. They are simply not allowed to be declared the initial target.
