View Full Version : Gunfighter VS Point Blank

While Gunfighter(rather lengthily) explains that it allows a model to make a ranged attack in 0.5" melee range, Point Blank simply states;

"Point Blank - During its activation, this model can make melee attacks with its ranged weapon, with a 1⁄2˝ melee range. Do not
add this modelʼs STR to damage rolls made with ranged weapons. Charge attacks made with ranged weapons are not boosted."

Is this short-form for the same rule? Or does Point Blank literally count as a melee attack, using MAT instead of RAT and functioning identically to a normal melee weapon, except with fixed pow instead of PS? Or is it just 'gunfighter' that's only active during the model's activation?

Functionally, the key differences are that Point Black uses MAT instead of RAT and it counts as a melee attack rather than a ranged attack. For example, this means that Sea Dog Crew, who have Point Blank, can attack with both their sword and pistol against an engaged opponent. In contrast, Dannon Blythe, who has gunfighter, has to choose whether to make initial ranged attacks or initial melee attacks against an engaged opponent and thus only gets to attack with either her gun or sword, not both.

They are actually Quite different.

Gunfighter allows you to make a Ranged attack in combat,
Which has the following implications.
You use your Rat
If you miss you scatter the shot into hand to hand
If you are standing in a forest/cloud the enemy model will recieve consealment and/or cammo.
Duelist will not work against it, neither will Riposte
Force Barrier/Deceleration/Deflection Will work against it.
Gun can be used to make free strikes
It must hit against defense 5 against knocked down models.
You may not use Gun Fighter, and a melee attack in the same turn

Point blank on the other hand.
Uses your Mat
Does not scatter into combat
May not be used for Free Strikes
Duelist does work on it
Decelerate, Force Barrier, Consealment/Camo do not work against it
It automaticly hits knocked down models
May not be used for free strikes.
You may use Point Blank and your melee attack in the same turn.

Looking at the models that have it, if I were to take a guess at the design, point blank is a rule that allows models with both a melee and a ranged attack, to suck at shooting, but still want another hand to hand weapon. If you look at the units that have it(baring Ashlyn), are terrible shots with their guns, but decent in hand to hand.

Where as Units with Gun Fighter are terrible in hand to hand, and generally decent shots, If you were to replace Gun fighter with point blank or viversa these units would suddenly have to become very good at something they aren't good at.

Actually, Ashlynn has gunfighter and virtuoso now. So she isn't necessarily an exception.

I was asked to clarify this yesterday at the LGS, funny to see it show up here today.

The simple short of it is Gunfighter allows the model to make a ranged attack (RAT) in melee; Point Blank allows the model to make a melee attack (MAT) with its ranged weapon.

Okay, so in vertually(literally?) all regards a model with point blank can use their ranged weapon exactly like a melee weapon, wheras with gunfighter, its still a ranged weapon attack in all regards, with some adjustments.

So if a model had 'ranged attacks automatically miss', like from a choir, or wrack, or Vlad's Wind Wall, it would effect a model with gunfighter, but not a model with Point Blank?

To the best of my knowledge, yes.
