Based on the wording of Gaze, it would suggest that since a model B2B with the Avatar CANNOT move closer to the Avatar, then it cannot make an advance if it activates under Gaze. However, would it be allowed to change facing?

changing facing should be ok as no distance is involved

The definition of "towards" allows changing facing. But if the Avatar gets B2B with a model and that model is affected by the Gaze, then that model can only turn in place, no other movement, as even rotating around the Avatar while staying B2B does NOT satisfy "towards".
