Force Barrier gains +2 defense against ranged attacks and ignores blast damage but how is that effected by magic attacks and magical ranged attacks respectively?

I just didn't understand, do magical aoes count as blast damage? And if they are negated are the spell effects from being in the aoe still applied?

Also are magical attacks privvy to the +2 defense? The answer seems obvious, but I've relied when any denial comes into this game the words start to get blurry on all sides.

Thanks.

Force Barrier works exactly how it's written:
- you get +2 DEF against ranged attacks, if it is not a ranged attack, you don't get the bonus
- you ignore blast damage, it doesn't matter if it is from a ranged or magic attack
- spell effects and continuous effects are still applied, even if a AOE template is used

magical ranged attack is ranged attack.
magical melee attack is melee attack.
magic attack is neither ranged attack nor melee attack, it is magic attack.
if a spell or weapon do not specify what kind of damage it deal , then it deal blast damage normally to to those who are hit by not direct hit.
if a spell or weapon say "model hit suffer a XXX damage roll " , then it deal XXX damage to every model it hit. if XXX is not blast , then it does not deal blast damage.

Basically, there are three common types of attacks, Ranged attacks, Melee attacks, and Magic attacks (spells). Magic attacks are not to be confused with attacks with a magical weapon (which makes magical ranged or melee attacks). As a spell is not a ranged attack (unless otherwise specified), it would not be affected by the +2 Def. However, if he was caught in the blast from an AOE spell,he would be immune to it, as spells do blast damage just as ranged attacks do.

Hope that helps :)

Also note that if an AOE that causes an effect other than blast damage (say one member of the unit receives a direct, critical hit from a Phoenix's Halo Cannon, which causes continuous fire to all models hit), that though they ignore the blast they do not ignore the other effects. In the case of my example, any other satyxis under the template would not take the blast damage, but would suffer the continuous fire effect.

Ok, thanks so much for the fast answers - I feel like you already answered in the first post already BUT in the spirit of being on a forum on the interweb... asking dumb noob questions..

If a spell is has an AOE effect that says something along the lines of... " target directly hit suffers pow XX dmg roll, all other units under the aoe template suffer pow XX dmg roll"... does the addition spell effect [2nd reference] count still as blast damage.. or will it be more specific and say magic damage? Thanks, and sorry for the confusing posts [if they are] and for all the fish....

Cheers!

no , if it doesn't say "suffer a pow X blast damage roll" , it's not blast damage.
it's still a damage caused by magic attack.

The second reference is not blast damage, no.
